Custom cutting Roll Paper

Custom cutting Roll Paper

2007-10-24 by David H. Miller

I'd like to use Epson Enhanced Matte in my R2400 for some panoramics
with Piezography (which works beautifully for me), but can't find 13
inch roll paper.

Has anyone tried having a larger, e.g. 24 inch roll cut into 13 and 11
inch rolls? And if so, who, what and where? The only guillotine
cutter a friend has can't handle this big of a roll. Or is there a
special source of 13, or a reason it isn't available?

I figure I could print well on both sizes as some of the pans don't go
beyond 10 inches wide by 30-40 inches.

A while ago on this or another thread someone said that he binds the roll
very tightly then takes it to a cabinet shop where the cut it for him on a
bandsaw. Seems worth a try.

It has appeared often over the last few years. Many use a chop saw to cut
down rolls to smaller sizes. Good blade, tape up the roll to prevent free
paper dust and it shouldn't be a problem.

Why don't they cut it in manufacturing? Probably a bigger waste of resources
than they get back on that time.

Moab used to make 13" rolls. Maybe they still do.

Hawk Mountain has a paper very similar to EEM (called Sparrowhawk) which is
available in 13"x100' rolls. Most of our papers are available as 13" wide
rolls.

I bought a roll of EEM and the vendors cut it down for me. But then I found that PremierArt Matte BW is around the same price, alpha cellulose and double-sided. All round, better - and available in 13" rolls.

Dave, try:

www.digitalartsupplies.com

They have many rolls in stock and will custom cut their stock for $10/cut.

Bought a 32T/inch blade for my hacksaw and used it to cut 13" X50' rolls(4) down to 6.5"
wide
for my R2400. Cut edge was a little rough, and since I am trimming edges after printing, it
was no problem.
Kept the vacuum cleaner handy to keep sawdust(powder) under control. Used an 'A' clamp
to secure the roll to my work table for cutting.
Had gotten quotes from printing 'Converting' companies for 'slitting' and it was too
expensive in small quantities.
Good Luck!

A woodworkers or metalworkers bandsaw with a fine blade can be used, but it
sometimes creates interlocking fuzz on the edge of the outer most paper. A bit
of finishing can help with this... say on a disc sander. The bandsaw blade
must be sharp, and well tensioned, or you can end up with a wavering edge on your
prints.

My 2c worth ...

I've found Sparrowhawk fine for daytime shots, but for night shots or low-key portraits with large black areas I've found PremierArt Matte BW much better - smoother blacks and better dmax - the Sparrowhawk looks a bit blotchy in comparison.

I hope this helps,

Hi,
I just talked to Red River Paper about getting metric sizes made and yes, they will custom cut sizes for you. The extra charge for this is $10 per cut.

The expense of doing extra sizes like A4 would be the packaging, they said - so if you get a custom size, it will only be shrink-wrapped. They would like to do metric sizes, but as 99% of their business is in the USA, it's not worth it for them.

So yes, you could get one of their rolls cut down. The smallest roll they make is 17" x 50' long, but it would probably make better economics to get a larger roll cut down, as you said, so that you could use both halves.

But they do a cut sheet size of 13'x38' (although not in all papers), which I might avail myself of at a future date.

Good luck,
Richard
