Ilford Gold Fibre, First Impressions

Ilford Gold Fibre, First Impressions

2007-12-05 by brouwerkent

Just received a pack of s Ilford Gold Fibre, and this appears to my eye every bit as nice as
Innova Ftype...but at close to half the price. I am in the middle of profiling, but it looks
very very nice to me in my first tests.

The Innova Ftype is a paper that seems very prone to surface flaws. The Semi Matte seems
better, but still has occasional surface flaws that are annoying. Given the regularity of
surface flaws, the price is exorbitant IMHO.

Anyone have much experience with this new Ilford paper? I am thrilled to finally see a
paper that is cost effective...and on first impressions... very good quality control.

This has a hand and feel very much like my old beloved Ilford Galerie VC silver
paper....slightly warm base without the warmth getting in the way.

What are others impressions of this Ilford Gold? Any downsides that anyone is aware of?

I agree, very nice paper and so far you can't beat the price/quality
with competing fiber papers. I'm using it primarily for printing
warm toned images on my Epson 4000 with MIS inks and the prints are
very good with dmax 2.5+, minimal bronzing and GD. It doesn't do as
well on my 1800 with 3PKN+glop because of bronzing, but otherwise OK.

Phil,
I too, just received a roll of Gold Silk. I'm letting it warm up to
romm temp.

I plan on making some prints tonight. If it looks as good as Crane
SR, I'll be happy. I like the Ham. Pearl Rag, also.

Phil,

I just finished creating color profile and a set of toned and neutral
QTR profiles for this paper (4000 and MISPro color inks for all).

I printed a 16x20 color image and framed it two days ago and it is
awesome. Fantastic Dmax, exceptional color gamut, sharp with lots of
pop, nice surface sheen, nice stiff feel, and my framed photo looks
almost 3D. I've only done a few prints on it so far, but I am
impressed. I haven't done enough yet to make a conclusive
determination, but so far, so good.

Many luster or semi matte papers need to be hard mounted to a backing
board, otherwise they take on a wavy appearance when framed. My
first mounting job was done with acid free tape just along the top
(standard hinge) and I don't see any waviness, so this is another
plus. Hope they all hang that well. I haven't seen any wheel marks
yet, so that's good. Definitely one of the nicest papers I have
used.

I haven't noticed any downsides so far. Hope I don't.

What is the proper black ink cartridge for this Ilford Gold silk paper?

I am using an Epson 2200. Would I use the PK or the MK? Thanks for
any help. I guess that Atlex is the best place to buy?

Yes, use the PK ink on this paper.

I bought my paper from Atlex. Not sure if there is a cheaper source
or not, but they often have excellent prices.

Where are people buying this paper, and how much should we expect to pay? Thanks. Nancy

IT Supplies is another option. Not on their site yet, but you can
get some by calling. They both apparently drop ship from Memphis.

Re: Ilford Gold Fibre, First Impressions

Caveat: I'm still a novice here, perhaps an advanced beginner. I've
been on a quest to find an F-type paper that I really like. So far
I've tried Silver Rag, Fine Art Pearl, Harman FB AL Gloss, Moab
Colorado Gloss & Satine, Innova Ultra Smooth Gloss, Platinum Rag and
most recently, the Gold Fibre.

So far, my favorites would the the Harman Gloss for images with fine
detail, and the Silver Rag and Ultra Smooth Gloss for portraits.
Using the MK cartridge I also liked Platinum Rag for portrait work.
The only one I didn't care for was Fine Art Pearl.

That said, to my relatively untrained eye they are all quite good
papers and the differences between them are subtle. All of my
favorites are too expensive for me to use regularly, but the good
news is that the Gold Fibre Silk is just about as good as them for my
uses and it's a fraction of the price. I think it will become my
everyday printing paper (although I'm still waiting to try
Hahnemuhle's new baryta paper, which is also quite affordably priced
relative to the other F-types).

Whichever I choose I'll have a profile made for it and be happily on
my way. It has been a useful experiment trying all of these papers,
because now I know which ones I'll turn to when I have specific needs.

Chris

I'd be interested in a detailed comparison against the Innova F
Glossy bright. I have used that paper for a whiole, and love the
blacks. Really unique look to them. I tried the Harman, and was
not too happy - too sharp/perfect, making it more digital-looking
despite the traditional base and coating.

One nice thing about the Harman is the highlights. They are very
bright. I read the the Ilford Gold was a warmer base, but how is
the brightness compared to the Innova and the Harman? I want to
standardize on a paper with the blacks of the Innova and the whites
of the Harman. Should I keep dreaming?

Chris
