Garry,

There are a few option to get dot free images (both b/w and color) on Epson 7k/9k series printers.

I wil list a few for you:

1. PiezoBW24Pro
Uses Cone inks and driver. (Can use MIS FS inks)

2. Piezo 2
Uses a third party RIP licenses to Cone and Cone inks. (Can use MIS FS inks)

3. ImagePrint 4 by Colorbyte Software
Uses a large range of inks both quad black and color including Cone, MIS FS, and Lyon Quads.

4. Wausatch RIP
Uses a large range of color inks and supports MIS Quad black inks.

5. MIS Variable Mix inks
Uses Epson Driver and MIS VM inks.

I am sure that as time goes on, more products will become available.

It seems Piezo software is the only answer for relatively dot free
printing. I need an all in one solution - possibly a 7000 or 9000
that can print 8x10's through to 20x30's ganged up. The 8x10's have
to stand up to a closer viewing distance of course. Anyone done
great 8x10's on these larger machines. I Print very warm sepia.

My understanding is at this point, is that support for the Cone/MIS FS inks,
using Imageprint 4 & Piezo 2, is limited to the 7000 printer. More to come,
of course, but if you were to place an order today, the 7000 would be the
only printer supported.

Not true,

The RIP comes with built-in support for the 9000/9500. I have it and just looked.

Support for the Cone inks? I talked to Colorbyte on Thursday, and they told
me the Cone inkset is supported on the 7000 only at this time, with more to
come soon. I guess the programmers are one step ahead of the sales people.

Although I don't have a 7000, it is my understanding that the Epson driver
as used in the variable-tone setup can print visually dotless images on the
7000. (Of course, even Piezo has dots, the question is whether you can see
them under the conditions that the image will realistically be viewed.)

The new MIS VM-Sepia variable-mix/tone inkset covers the range of neutral to
sepia tones, and may be something you'd want to consider. For a sample of
the tonal range, see

Mike,

Is Piezo 2 dotless - or should I say, as dotless as Pro24?

I realise it is probably based on Imageprint 4, but I would think we
will have to wait and see output from it to be sure. Piezo Pro24, on
the other hand, is a proven product and has no visible dots on a
7000 - to me at any rate :-).

I have not seen output from Imageprint 4 - what is its B&W output
like? I guess if *that* is dotless, that probably answers the
querstion for Piezo 2 as well.

2002-02-02 by Paul Roark

I see the URL of the Vm-Sepia sample that I listed my previous post did not
survive the Yahoo formatting.

I thought the brackets were supposed to do that. Anyone know how to post a
long URL in tact?

Anyway, the URL for the files section of this forum is:
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint/files/>

Then you can paste the following onto the end of the above to get to the
sample:

Quentin,

ImagePrint 4 is dotless.

Remember that most RIPs compartmentalize the inks from what I understand, and overprint to fill in between the dots, while dirtributing them to create specialized dither patterns. (My laymans explanation, I know that Austin will give it to me for that one ;-)

Anyway, the dither pattern on IP4 is similar to Piezo but not quite the same. Give me your address and I will send you a print.
I hear that P2 is basically the same dither as IP4 although the P2 version is stripped down and offered with the different parts as an option. For example, Cone charges extra for the color section, etc.

From what I have seen, what one can say is that they are different. The Piezo
driver uses a grid pattern (albeit a fine one) and the Epson driven is a more
stochastic patterned halftone.

Re: [Digital BW] Piezo on 7000 - good enough for 8x10?

Garry,

By using an adjustment curve, the Epson driver can be made to "print-in" between the dots and create a solid patch of color. This is what the curves that Paul Roark developed do. The upside is you save a lot of money on a RIP. You may want to try this first and see if it meets your needs. By using the new Sepia-Neutral MIS VM inks in this manner you should be able to make lovely prints.

One other thing, depending on the paper and it's "bleed" characteristics, you can get completely dither-free prints. I find that the BrightCube paper have this characterisitic.
