Paper sizes and portfolio boxes

Paper sizes and portfolio boxes

2008-04-10 by p_bien

Is it just me or would it be nice if the paper manufactuers started
supply their fine art papers in sizes that perhaps a large majority of
American photographers would like to print to, in terms of creating
nice portfolios. Specifically I am thinking around 5X7, 8X10, or
11X14. A large number of the nice portfolio boxes I've seen start at
11X14. I'd like to create a portfolio of non-matted images but have
little papaer choices. Yes I can cut down the 11X17, thats not the
point. Anyone have a favorite 11X14 matte paper for black only
printing (R1800 3MK)? If Epson would cut their Fine Art Velvet to that
size I'd be happy.

What are your favorite portfolio boxes?

Thanks

I tried Red River Aurora Natural. Comes in 11x14. Could work for your
images. Did not for mine. Paul Roark has commented positively on this
paper on his website. I'd say give it a try. If you call Red River
just ask for a sample, they are very nice!

Light Impressions has many sizes available. LightImpressionsDirect.com
My paper catalog shows more than the web site does. You can request a catalog.

What I would like, is if the makers of frames, paper, portfolio boxes,
clear bags, etc. realized that many people's photographs who use DSLR's
is in the 2:3 format. 6"x9", 8"x12", 12x18". That is what I would like
to see. I don't like the dimensions for most subjects, but right now
that is what I am stuck with.

Paul

Why not try sourcing some European portfolio boxes? The Metric sizes A4,
A3, etc conform fairly well to the 2:3 format and are readily available. I
have the opposite problem here in the UK - I shoot mainly 4x5 and there are
very few paper sizes and only a limited choice of boxes that conform to that
format.
