Has anyone here tried the 16-bit OSX drivers for the Epson? any opinion as to whether or not there is a discernible difference in the prints from 8-bit to 16-bit. thanks, John H

Hi folks, I recently inherited an Epson 7600 from a friend who bought another printer. He's been using MIS UT7 inks on glossy paper with this printer. It produces good quality prints but has chronic clogging problems. I'm planning on using MIS Eboni-6 ink; I like printing on matte paper and have heard that Eboni-6 should be less troublesome. What's the procedure for changing over to the new ink? Drain the cartridges, fill them with new ink and then print until I flush the old ink out? Or is it more involved than that? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ken

Ken, probably best to get new empty carts (or prefilled if available). With the printer on, take each cart out, then turn power off. After a minute turn power on, install new carts. The printer goes through "initial fill" and charges the lines. You may still need to print a few sheets with ink from all nozzles to purge any remaining ink but this is less arduous. I am writing this from memory - I hope someone can correct me if I missed a step. It may be a good idea for you to get not only the manual but the service manual as well (which used to be available before Epson forbid their circulation). Eventually the printer will need to be reset when it thinks the drain pads are full and stops working. Tip: what appears as a "clog" or banding may or may not be due to ink issues alone. Anything from how each cart attaches to the ink nipple to the dampers and the heads themselves may have something to do with it. MIS thinks it is safest to have a cleaning-flushing cart middle step. While you'll probably never get all the old ink out of those old carts, I might flush those good with distilled water and then use them as the set of cleaning carts. I'd probably just mix some of my generic base (35% glycerol, 10% Photo Flo, remainder distilled water) to use as the flushing solution. I believe that is the reason folks have used Windex in the past for cleaning - for the ammonia. I use Paul's base diluted a bit more (more water, less glycerol) with ammonia and some isopropyl alcohol to clean when switching ink sets, or when I buy a used machine. I have heard recomendations not to leave the alcohol in for longer periods, like when storing a machine, because of it's hardening/aging effect on plastics. Best, Michael

Please note: MIS and Image Specialists are two different companies. MIS buys ink from Image Specialists. --------------------------------------------- Yes the cleaning fluid from Image Specialists does contain ammonia, just like the inks. Original formula Windex (with ammonia) works pretty well, especially for purging since you can buy the generic ammonia glass cleaner in gallon bottles really cheap. Just make sure to purge the line empty when you are done with Windex, the blue color does persist if you do not get the lines purged.
