Recommended proofing paper for the new semi-gloss fibre papers?

Recommended proofing paper for the new semi-gloss fibre papers?

2008-06-13 by jimbeaujack

I'm currently evaluating three of the new fibre papers (I like them
all!). But as they're quite pricey, I'd like to find a less expensive
paper for day to day proofing that uses the Photo Black cartridge in
my R2400. Swapping out the black carts for my normal matte proofing
paper is unacceptable. (Not to mention, matte paper does not tell me
how a print will look on the semi-gloss papers.)

BTW, the three papers are, from highest to lowest cost, Hahnemuhle
Fine Art Baryta, Innova Semi-matte, and Ilford Galerie Gold Silk
Fibre. In case anybody wants to know, here's my take on them:
Ilford: best value, warmest white, smoothest surface, ink appears to
sit very slightly on the surface.
Innova: Slightly blue, least bright, smooth surface with
unobjectionable texture, curls at edges a bit; my favorite, but just
slightly and only if cost is ignored.
Hahnemuhle: bright neutral white, very saturated, slight luster
texture that shows up when the light isn't just right, ink sits down
in the surface like a silver print, expensive!

Hi,

I plan on using Ilford Gold paper also. For proofing paper, I chose
Costco's Kirkland paper. While it's a glossy paper, it will be closer
to Gold Silk than matte paper. And the price is so low and the
results surprisingly good, that I can make prints with different
tonality from N-1 to Sepia to evaluate an image and it still won't
cost much.

But if there a a better and low cost proofing paper for Ilford Gold
silk, I'd like to know also.

Cheers,
Andre

Selling Epson 3000 (with a great history)

2008-06-13 by Arthur Fink

I'm getting ready to sell one of my Epson 3000 printers, which now
has MIS UT-FS ink. It's in Portland, Maine, (not on Peaks Island)
and I'd prefer not to ship this printer.

It's slow, but a workhorse, and produces beautiful prints. Paul
Roark sold this unit to me, so it must be loaded with good karma
along with the quad-tone ink.

Contact me directly if you're interested (af@...).

Best regards,

Arthur Fink

I also use the Innova Semi-Matte and have found Hawk Mountian's
SharpWing Luster to be a very nice and affordable paper for both
proofing and final. I also have gotten a sample of their Sparrowhawk
to try, but "so many papers-so little time", but also looks to be a
nice substrate.

great. but someone told me it scratches very easily. have you
experienced any problems with scratching on this paper?

No, I actually find the surface quite tough. I shocked a friend I was
showing the paper to when I dragged a fingernail across the surface of
a workprint to show him how hard the surface was compared to a matte
paper. The rubbing left a burnish mark of course, because I was
pressing into the paper, but it did not scratch the ink off at all.

I found the surface similar to Epson's SemiMatte which is what I was
looking for in the first place. I currently have a sample of
HawkMountain's SparrowHawk which is close to the Innova SemiMatte. The
Sharpwing Luster is an RC type paper, where the SparrowHawk is an alpha
cellulose.
