I can not find any information on how much ink is used on an 8x10 print. Can anyone help me with an estimated cost? thanks, Salman

Quite a while ago, I'd found an estimate on the Piezography/inkjetmall.com site that claimed $0.50 per 8x10. Oddly, that page is no longer there -- but Google still has it in its cache. Here's what it used to say: > 860 / 1160 cartridges when used with PiezographyBW software produce @35 8" x > 10" prints before the gray cartridge is spent. Anyway, I've used this fifty-cent estimate as a working cost. Anyone else have estimates? john

I'm not printing monochrome, just Gen 4, but I do make a lot of big prints. I'd be doomed without the CIS. I figure the ink is free, the only real cost is the paper. Don't tell Epson! : ) Peter McLennan

That's with the expensive cone ink. its much cheaper with other inksets. Jerry John Labovitz wrote:

Thanks for everyones help. I am now looking at ordering a CIS sytem to go along with the 1160. I looked at the prices of the Piezography*BW inks and I think I will stick with MIS inks for now (they are actually in my price range). In my recent 1160 CIS shopping, InkJetArt.com was a little less expensive than MediaStreet.com for me. Because the CIS cost enough to qualify for free shipping at InkJetArt.com. I assume that's not why InkJetArt.com left the instructions out and MediaStreet sent me two copies of the CIS instructions with their CIS-Gen4 bundle. Or why InkJetArt didn't respond to my e-mail inquiry when I wrote to ask about my order after I got my MediaStreet order but still had not, a few days later, gotten my InkJetArt order. The big CIS-related bargain, however, if they work, is the cart-plugging rivets MIS sells for pennies apiece on InkSupply.com. The other two sell acrylic cartridge stands for about as much as the acrylic bottle stands. The bottle stands, incidentally, add enough to the width of the printer to make installation and refilling awkward for me. If any of the web sites offering them or NoMoreCarts' itself provides bottle-stand dimensions, I couldn't find them. The squarish four-bottle stands I got are roughly 5 1/8 inches by 4 3/4 inches. Whereas the bottles themselves are about two inches in diameter. The difference will keep me from having quite enough wiggle room if I use the stands instead of lining the bottles up in a one-bottle deep column alongside the printer. Sam

Soon I hope to be using MIS's VMQ Sepia-Neutral inkset in an 1160 and would like to be able to compare notes with other VM users, who might have kept their printer driver more up to date. Looking for my 1160 printer driver, I found first an Apple Control Panel called "Software Update" and ran it. It suggested only CarbonLib 1.5 (which I didn't do because I don't have OS X yet). But would Apple's Software Update know if the 1160's printer driver was out of date? I can't find the driver itself but don't know what I'm looking for. I thought it would be an extension, but I didn't see one that looked promising. On Epson's update download page for inkjets, Epson's web site lists: >Printer Driver v6.3 AE >Macintosh System 8.5 - 9.0 >MSC116063AE.SEA.hqx - 5.9 MB - posted on 7/20/00 >This installer will place a folder on the Desktop labeled, "Stylus >Color 1160 V 6.3AE". Open the folder and run the installer found in >the folder labeled Disk1. Read the "README" file on DISK1 for more >details. This driver will eliminate the need to use the Updater >patch to resolve the character clipping issue. But I've never had a character-clipping or other problem with my driver, whatever and wherever it is. And I hesitate to replace it without knowing what's up. On the other hand, I'm about to install the Neutral-Sepia inkset and would like to be able to compare notes with other 1160 MIS VM users, who might be using v6.3 AE. Any advice about 1160 driver maintenance with VM use in mind is welcome. Sam

Sam, The Software Update control panel is only for the Macintosh OS - so it will not update any third party drivers. Though OS X has some built-in Epson Drivers I don't think they support the 1160 and you are still running OS 9. It's a good chance you still have the latest drivers as the last driver update was some time ago - almost two years. I have both the 1160 (VM) and 1200 (Generations) - so there could be some overlap with the extensions with me. There is an Epson folder inside the Extensions folder that has Epson libraries and other extensions and some loose Epson extensions floating around in the Extensions folder. I'd just reinstall the latest drivers and don't worry about it. Though some might say don't fix something that ain't broke. Best, John V.
