Printer for B&W only

Printer for B&W only

2008-10-13 by martinrspellman

Hi,

I hope this question isn't too common. I searched but didn't find
anything too relevant. I am also a newbie as far as B&W printing is
concerned, so I apologize in advance for my ignorance.

I want to purchase a printer/ink system exclusively for B&W printing.
I already have a color printer that I am very happy with (an Epson
R1900 that I got at a great price from a friend). However it only has
one black cartridge so the B&W output is not very good.

I have an unused Epson 1270 lying around and have read a little on
Paul Roark's website about using the MIS Ultra Tone FS inks with this
printer. Do you think this is a good way to go? Are there other
used printers to look for instead that would be significantly better?

I am willing to spend up to $500 for a B&W printer if necessary, but
thought that with this printer (or another inexpensive used or
refurbed printer) I could spend the money on ink and paper instead.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Marty

I bought a refurb Epson 2400 from
the Epson Store for just a bit over
$500.

It has three black inks.

Does a wonderful job on B&W!

The FS inks in the 1270 might be a reasonable way to start, but I'm
not sure I'd want to go that far back in terms of the hardware,
inksets, or workflows.

The Epson 1400 is, I think, the most for the money now. There are a
number of inksets for it. I've worked up a couple. See
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/UT14.pdf and
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-6.pdf
I think there is also a Piezo inkset for it.

I think Eboni-6 in a 1400 with a "color managed" Epson driver
workflow using QTR's Create ICC or Create ICC-RGB is the best
workflow.

I'm currently a fan of 100% carbon hextone inksets.

The 1270 is fine unless you want your work to look like it's from another printer. I use mine for Black channel printing - rather than gray ink printing. Try to remember that looks come and go, and, everyone wants to sell you something : )

While my 1270 can be fussy when it dries up, I'm happy with it and the old 3000 & 640 4-colors. Printing is a matter of taste, so you might explore the 1270 at minimal cost first. Go through all the sampler paks you can find and get some idea where you want to go.

Everyone,

Thanks for your help. I took Paul's and Bishop's advice and ordered
the refurbed Epson 1400 and the Eboni-6 inks.

Thanks again.

Marty
