I hate LCD screens

I hate LCD screens

2009-04-05 by yaakovsinclair

My old Cathode Ray monster is starting to flicker in the bottom right
hnd cnr. This probably means it's going on the blink before too long.
All the screens today seem to be LCD's which are much too constrasty for
my work. I can't seem to judge anything on them! Are CRT's still
available, and if not, how do I solve the problem of working with an
LCD?
thanks!

A properly calibrated LCD should have exactly the same contrast and color as
a properly calibrated CRT. That's what calibration does. So you need a
decent monitor calibrator.

You can still get CRTs of all sizes cheaply on Ebay. The problem is
usually shipping costs - large CRT monitors are very heavy.

I think you need to do some research. Todays higher end LCDs are even
better then CRTs for getting monitor to print matching. Look at the
Eizos. There is a reason they don't make CRTs anymore. I would never
want to go backwards.

I find a well calibrated LCD fine for assessing tonality and color when comparing monitor to print. Where I noticed the biggest difference is assessing sharpening. LCDs and CRTs seem different in this respect, and it is just a matter of getting used to it. In my opinion, neither accurately portrays sharpening in the finished print, so it is just experience with your monitor and printed results.

LCDs are only too contrasty if you let them be. It takes a bit of time
to adjust to a new display type, but if you control the display and
the ambient lighting appropriately an LCD will show you a good
representation of your image. In face, they are sharper than CRTs,
especially old CRTs, and don't flicker, so they cause less eye
fatigue, as long as you calibrate them so that they don't cause glare.

I've purchased two different 21's off eBay, and also got one from a friend who went LCD. They are not throw-away electronics and can be repaired. Could be just a leaky capacitor. My Mitsi 91TXM has had some flicker phases but has been stable for several months. I managed to swap a CRT from another brand many years ago - just making sure the connections were the same - so it's far from rocket science.

I held off getting rid of my CRT's for a long time, but eventually they
got too dim.. To replace them, I gotta Dell 2909WA. I like it, cheap
as it is, better than the old Sony and Samsung CRTs. 22" is a nice
size, being big enough for multiple windows, but not monstrously big
like a 26" or 30". Viewing angles are very good. Calibrated color is
also quite good. Sharpening web images on it gives a more realistic
impression of what other people will see, as LCDs predominate. My CRT's
required much more sharpening for the image to look sharp on screen.
When those files are viewed on an LCD, they look over sharpened.
