Video on making QTR profiles with Printfix!

If someone put an effective one together, we could probably host it in
our "videos" section of the Datacolor site.

I think that this would be an outstanding idea! But I think it would be best requested on the QTR site.
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP/?yguid=77473018
I for one would like to see a video on anything with QTR. The "manual" doesn't address all the features such as "Create ICC" since it was done back in '05(before Create ICC was out). It would also be nice to see what we're suppose to be looking at as far as what we're taking measurements of and how they relate in print.

While I'm not into making videos, I have posted a very brief description of how I use the ColorVision PFP for profiling with QTR. See
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Spectro.pdf

Most of my recent PDFs have sections on QTR profiling. See for example http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eb1400.pdf and http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Carbon-k2-k3.pdf -- the one I'm currently working up, basically documenting my C6 experiments aimed at the 7800 and other k3 as well as k2 printers.

1400 nightmares

2009-09-13 by James Irelan

I've got yet another e mail out to Dana at Cone's for possible help
getting these 1400s to work. I have two, with color CISes. Neither
one has functioned properly. The one I've been working on currently
keeps showing an error light, pointing to a particular cart. When I
pull up that cart and put it back down, it may work then, or go to
another cart. I fix that one, maybe it'll work for a cleaning cycle
or two, then boom, another light. I've pulled ALL of the carts at a
time, put them back, then it will seem to work longer- maybe four or
five cleaning cycles, but before long, there's another light, and
it'll go on like that in an ongoing cycle from color to color, getting
back to a color I've already fixed. Before the lights started being
the main problem, I did I don't know how many pad soaks with Cone's
red flush, and windex-soaked paper towel cleans, trying to get full
nozzle checks. Never could. Pulled the carts and flushed with a
syringe and plastic tube over the intake nib with Cone's red flush.
Still problems. These printers worked fine when I first got them,
with the OEM carts in. Perfect from the start. With Cone's CISes:
nothing but problems.

I use these printers primarily for everyday printing, with the goal of
being able also to print a good small print as a proof or whatever. I
long for the days of 1160s with NoMoreCarts- never a problem. I've
got some of these printers still, don't know if they could be
resurrected any more, or if the driver for them for OS X, which I just
downloaded, will work in Snow Leopard. I need a printer that works,
not one that I continually have to try to get working.

Anyone know of a good 1160-like trouble-free workhorse daily printer
with a CIS available for it? Anyone want two 1400s?

James isn't the Cone CIS reset with a small push button switch?
Why are you removing the carts? I don't have a 1400 CIS (just 1900) so I am
extrapolating some what.

Are you using Cone ink and CIS or some other CIS?

More info would be useful.....

I HAVE 2 1400's..One is set up with MIS UT-14 toneable B&W pigs with
auto-re-set chips in refillable spongeless carts, and my other is set up
with LYSON Fotonic XG "Claria Clones", Also with their auto-reset chip
"TRIO" refillable carts.
     I've owned 3 1160s, 4 1280's, and these 2 1400's are the BEST 13"
carriage printers I've used BY FAR..I refill my carts individually..I
gave-up on continuous flow systems and "clogs" along time ago....Including
NO-MORE-CARTS, and systems from MIS and others..There all pretty much the
same....I buy my inks in 4 oz bottles of each color, save a bundle, and
"LOOK MA..NO MORE CLOGS!"

Paul,

Are you still using HP K in any of your printers and have you tried it on
the 7800? What are your latest thoughts on this ink?

Thanks,

I agree. No way I'd want to go back to the older ones. I have not used a 1900, but the 1800 I have sitting here just sits here.

Yes. It's lived in my 1400 in the C position for quite a while now. I use it in black-only mode (via QTR) for my glossy brochures, and it does a very good job.

No, that's going to be a dedicated 100% carbon printer.

I haven't been able to use mine enough to tell : ) Actually, I'm
pretty sure all the problems are related to the CISes, not the
printers themselves. And where that's concerned, as I say: the old
days were trouble- free, and now- nothing but trouble. I'm glad to
hear some good reports on the printers. I'll look for an alternative.
I almost was going to put in some oem carts today just to get a couple
of things printed I need. Could't bring myself to pay $80+ for those
tiny little carts. I'm so used to having a CIS that simply works.

James,

After using two Epson 1160s with NoMoreCarts CIS (Yes, I remember the green shift!)I now have an Epson 1400 with third party auto-reset carts that I bought off eBay. Works like a charm.

I also have a brand new unopened CIS that I know I'll never use. The auto-reset carts are so easy I just refill without taking them out of the printer.

Cheers,
Andre

James did you try lifting the CIS ink levels above the head? The biggest
problems with CIS are when you have the ink bottles too low (starving the
head of ink) or too high (flooding the head). Mike

Re: [Digital BW] Re: 1400 nightmares

2009-09-15 by James Irelan

Glad to hear it. MIS are the ones I ordered.

I had terrible problems about 5 years ago with Lyson- cost me a huge
amount of time, money and effort, so much so that I became on first
name basis with the Lyson techs and reps, as they really did try to
help, but nothing did, and the episode really derailed my printing, so
I will never buy anything that says Lyson on it again, even if they
are under new ownership.

Adding a question to the subject: Considering the way UT-14 is set, including the Glop, there's no point in trying to use spyder3print to make profiles for it,right?

I use the ColorVision PFP spectro all the time to measure the 21-step test strips for QTR and QTR's Create ICC. I don't make color profiles with the Spyder3Print software for UT14. The UT-3D was the inkset I designed that allowed that type of color profiling.
