art papers

Hey gang -

In regard to using Arches Hot Press or really any other printmaking paper with ink jet printers, what do you coat/size the paper with? I am about to experiment with American Masters in my R2400 with K3 inks but would love advice before doing so. I don't want to use that InkAid stuff (I think that is what is was called?)

Thank you!

I find the dmax with Arches Hot Press to be good enough with no coating at all. So, I don't mess with any of the coatings. While I think experimenting with coatings might be interesting, I think one point of using Arches is to avoid any coating that might be seen as a source of problems down the road.

Arches is already internally sized with gelatin, I believe. What little information I found on the likely long term archival effects of this sizing appear to be positive. It may actually help the paper. In any case, Arches' reputation in the the art field is such that the fewer additional chemicals added, the better.

It might be interesting to experiment with aditional gelatin sizing, ala
carbon transfer prints. See:
http://www.alternativephotography.com/articles/art110.html Go down to the
"Preparing Final Support Papers" section. I'm working on starting carbon
transfer printing, and so I don't want to get sidetracked, but after awhile,
I'll try some sized art papers. At that time, I can do some inkjet printing
on the regular art paper and one's with additional gelatin sizing.
