I’d like to buy an R1400 and experiment with QTR and Eb6, BO, HP-PK, etc. perhaps moving to a CIS when I settle on something. What are the recommended refillable carts I should look at for the 1400? Are the Lin Exports carts on eBay any good? http://tinyurl.com/mqgctm Thanks for any advice. Tom Husband

Tom, Recently Staples Office Supply offered the Epson 1400 at $200 (US). 1/3 off, no shipping! I bought to try non-Epson inks and methods. I began with MIS inks (Ebony 6-ink set for Epson 1400). Here's why: Paul Roark (a familiar name on this list) has written extensively on third-pary inks with Epson printers. He "designs" inksets sold by MIS. My MIS experiences are positive. Good folk. It's early days, but I am thrilled with the 1400, Paul Roark, MIS (carts and inks) and the prints on the studio walls. Welcome aboard! regards, Will Clark

Thanks Will. I'll check out Staples. I know the contribution Paul has made to B&W printing is huge. Maybe I'll go with the MIS carts and ink to start. Does MIS sell empty refillable carts for the 1400 too? I've looked but can't seem to find anything. Thanks Paul. Would that be the Black and White EB6 Cartridges or Empty (with chip) Cartridges? What's the difference between quick reset and auto reset chips? Tom, I began my MIS Ink and Epson 1400 "Ebony adventure" with a set of Ebony-ink prefilled cartridges (MIS EB6-1400-SET $95.45) a set of empty 1400 carts (ARC-1400-EC-SET $32.95) and one 4-0z bottle of each of the six Ebony inks (MIS EB6-4-X, where X is the printer ink "position", $18 per 4-oz bottle).I already owned syringes, etc. The MIS web site takes some patience to learn. They offer a remarkable array of items. I'm sure others have success with other inks and carts from other sources, but I felt the combo of MIS service and Paul Roark's input was a sound beginning. I have no connection, $ or other, with MIS, Epson or Roark. I come at this from a lifetime in the darkroom with alt-proc such as carbon-transfer printmaking. The EB6 ink color pleases my eye. Reasonable folks can differ where art is concerned! Enjoy the trip, Will Clark willclark.clark@... --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Tom Husband <tom.husband@...> wrote:

Thanks Will. I decided to do more or less the same. I've had a R2400 for while and am familiar with QTR but the appeal of all carbon pigment ink, the small drop size of the 1400 and combining BO with Eb6 for the best of both is just too tempting. Am now just waiting for the 1400 price to come down a bit. Best I can find now is ~$200. Thanks again for your help. Hi Will, The 1400 has six inks, K, C, LC, M, LM and Y. I bought the EB6-1400-SET but I see when buying EB6 in bulk there's also LK and LLK. Are they for, say, a 2400? Paul Roark's instructions for Eboni-6 say there are 6 inks but MIS shows 8 when LK and LLK are included. Just wondering.
