Hi all, I think I'm finally getting a Canon 5D Mk II and I am giddy with excitement. Any thoughts from those of you who have one? I read something in a previous thread about it not being a sealed body. Has this caused anyone problems? Thanks! Sarah

Canon had not, to my knowledge, responded publicly about that. It's marketed as a sealed body; but an early expedition to Anarctica caused a number of 5D Mll bodies to fail. Possibly a batch problem; a missing or misplaced seal. But it does make one think twice about inclement conditions. Having a public statement about it would be better than leaving a questionmark. Wonderful camera, however... C. D. Tobie Global Product Technology Mngr. Digital Imaging & Home Theater Datacolor.com CDTobie@...

I read something in a previous thread about it not being a sealed body. Has this caused anyone problems? I'm very happy with my 5d2. I find, however, that some of the lenses that I thought were rather good are not so good after all. Getting meduim format quality from a 35 takes really good optics and careful shooting. I used to think a speed 2 times the focal length was fast enough for hand holding. Now my standard is 4 times (without IS). I've taken shots in the heavy mist of waterfalls with no ill effects. I'm not sure what the Antarctica experience was all about. I'm hoping it was an early batch problem. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

I've not been in Antartica recently so I've not experienced any sealing problems. I love the camera. To my standards, that may be lower than Paul's, the image quality is fantastic. Especially the high ISO performance is so much better then anything I've seen before. Joost --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, "sagaface" <sagaface@...> wrote:

I bought the 5D-II as soon as it was available in Canada. I had been using a 5D. Under normal circumstances I find the 5D-II to be a significant improvement over the 5D, which was pretty good. It's difficult to quantify, but the 5D-II is good enough that I can "relax" with the technology, in the way that I can relax with a Leica M or when using an Apo-Symmar lens on a Linhof. I hasten to add that this screen-pattern noise is very subdued, appears only when the shadows are brought up a great deal and, probably, only when the image contains patterns or textures that all me to recognize subtle patterns. Anyway, I love the camera. ...well, it's not a Leica M with Tri-X, but it's hard to be disappointed with it! Now, if only I could find lenses good enough! Myron

With it and the new Canon tilt shift 24 and 17, we're finally getting some top notch wide glass. Some test shots with the 21 are at http://www.16-9.net/lens_tests/canon1740_nikon1735/c1740vn1735a.html. I might add that on the budget end the 35 f/2, if stopped down and cropped to 8x10 is very good. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

Add me to the list of those that love their 5D Mk II. Most of the recent posts on by photo blog were shot with my 5D. With this camera, I actually have to reduce the file size to fit an image on an 18 x 24 size poster(with a two inch border). And this past weekend I made two large panoramas using only two or three frames from the 5D. The image quality is outstanding. I love this camera! Michael D Sherer www.heartlandviews.com

Add me to the list. Made some 90x60 cm prints with Qimage and they are perfect for me. Have the 24-105 lens as I can't afford a set of the more expensive prime lenses. May end with some Polar primes, the Sigma 50 mm 1.4 and the Sigma 70 mm 2.8 macro but even that has to be done gradually. -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Ernst Dinkla Gallery Canvas Wrap Actions | Dinkla Grafische Techniek | | www.pigment-print.com | | ( unvollendet ) |

well if you want to see a lot of large prints made from the camera, go see this- http://www.custom-digital.com/2009/09/daniel-beltra-the-princes-rainforest-project-exhibition/ there are images printed from several Canon models in the show, I'm not going to tell you which are which. Prints this size reveal the performance of the cameras and lenses easily. Tyler --- In DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com, Ernst Dinkla <edinkla@...> wrote:

I'm not so sure this is an OT thread. BW performance is close enough to on-topic for cameras that are a big change in imaging from their predecessors or bring something new to the "affordable" price ranges. A thread on BW qualities of the 24MP Sonys, or Nikon's D3x, or "D700x," would be fine with me. Bob G (shooting w/ D200 and an underused F3)

Sadly, Tina, I sold all of mine (and the M6, and the IIIfs, and the Russian and Voigtlander screw mounts and adapters, and . . .) as well as the Nikon, Rollei and Minox film cameras, and applied the funds to Nikon digitals (APS sensors) and printers. Remember that Leica said they couldn't make a digital M because of the flange to film distance and oblique angles, etc. Who knew? Oh well, even if I'd kept the lenses I wouldn't be able to afford the M9 now that I've retired. I have a friend with an M8 and envy you yours. Hope the M9 is everything it seems to be from preliminary reports. By the way, I've placed a JPG of many relevant MTF charts at http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/MTF%20charts.jpg Most are Canon or Zeiss lenses for the EF mount. I've included some Leica lenses for comparison. Note that Photodo, tested at 10, 20, and 40 lp/mm, as does Zeiss. Canon tests at 10 and 30. So, the Canon charts are not very comparable. The easiest way to tell the difference between the lenses is to look at the thin dotted line near the edge. I crop and tend to not worry too much about the very corner. Paul www.PaulRoark.com

hi gals & guys i am somewhat disappointed with my 5D Mll especially now that the 7D is around the corner which seems to be a much better camera video wise at least.i do come from a film/video background so i am somewhat opinionated about this. i moved up to 5DMll because i wanted a full frame camera and the people selling used 5D's were asking way too much around here. the video component also was very enticing but 30 frames and no locked auto focus or face recognition software seems like they are just waiting for Mark lll to come out.reminds me of the epson 4000 & 4800 introductions. to not be able to sync sound to video seems silly. i looked at some video i lit for some other shooter and i see how silly it looks. picture looks nice but since edison figured out how to record voices and made pictures you'd think canon who makes video cameras might have married the two together on this camera. but i guess it had something to do with turf wars. one the plus side the sensor on the Mll gives great color rendition well it is an improvement over my 20D that's for sure.the file size for my usage is over the top, i don't shoot billboard art but some do. with genuine fractal's i seem to be able to get the size prints i want. i might want to do billboards later in life so maybe having such big files will come in handy.i get a whooping 300 some odd images on a card now. lexar should be happy. as far as the seals go i try and keep my cameras out of water etc but it would be nice to have it sealed well. as far as the software is concerned i am still learning it. i shoot mostly 4 gb cards so i can back them up on dvds and the new 9999 images on a folder threw my backup workflow off. i am adjusting as i know others are. so it's just not a matter of dragging and dropping a folder onto a drive. yes redundancy backups on hd and dvds. oh did i mention battery size. if the 7D can use the same legacy batteries then why did i have to buy new ones for the Mll, oh the camera didn't cost enough money, i see. at least i don't have to get new lenses. but hey nothing is perfect in this world and we all need to make a buck, well except me, i seem to be supporting manufactures of equipment while art sales have plummeted bouncing off the floor but hey we all got to eat. maybe i can crack open some 20D batteries and see how they taste. well maybe my tune will change once i learn the new camera system. remember the old camera where there was a f stop ring & focus thingy that seemed to work pretty good, still have my F1 loved the look of that camera and the metering system, whew be still heart. just my uninformed take on the subject maybe some day i'll know more.but i do like fast lenses and cool cars. jene www.jeneyoutt.com

I mildly complained about a window-screen-like noise pattern of noise when shadows are pulled up a great deal. Mike Johnston replied: > For the noise, > Check out the bottom of > http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/digital/canon_eos_5D_mkii_review_3.html > > I turned Auto Lighting Optimizer and Highlight Tone Priority off > and the noise went way down. > > Mike J. I just discovered that in the C.FnII: Image menu (custom functions) all of the "improvements" were by default set to some level of "on". I have now turned them all off. I had (incorrectly?) assumed that these functions would have no impact at all on raw files, which I "develop" with non-Canon software. I'll experiment this weekend and see it this makes a difference for underexposed Gordon Setter images! Thanks, Mike. I had read that long ago, but thought it only affected jpgs. Myron ... and about that Leica: oh yes, indeed, I would love to own a Leica M9 (is it 9?)... but I'm not in that snack bracket. The 5D-II was jaw- droppingly expensive: 50% more than my first *new* car! And the Leica is more like my *second* new car. Gaack! I'm psychologically pegged to the era when a Nikon-F was expensive at $250 and a Linhof Master Technika was absurd at $1500. Needless to say, my Leica M4-P was purchased new, as was the Summicron 50/2. How in the world buys these $3K-$4K lenses these days???? The Canon 50/1.4 is a very fine lens, fully up to the 5D-II, although mine is not quite as "sharp" as the copy owned by a friend. I have several other Canon lenses (mostly L's), and none of them are in the same league as the 50/14. I'm hoping the new 100 L macro will be up to its hype... As a result of a suggestion a couple days ago, I turned off all of the "Custom Functions II: Image" functions. I had assumed that they would have no effect on raw files. I was wrong. With an image of a wide- range scene containing a black dog (Gordon Setter) in a shaded areas, I pulled up the shadows, revealing a good deal of noise... but no pattern noise. So that solved my problem. (The noise was mostly color noise.) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
