5d mk II....need PSCS4? AND Epson 7900 coming!

2009-10-01 by sagaface

I've seen a couple threads advocating either using Canon's software to convert to TIFFs or some kind of DNG converter. I only have PSCS and have been happy as a clam with it. If I want to use PS RAW must I really upgrade?

Looks like I'm really getting one of these babies. And an Epson 7900!! It's like Christmas over here at my house. There's a place in the Chicago 'burbs that I am ordering the 7900 from, and they couldn't be nicer. I figure paying the hefty sales tax is worth having help and service close by. Going out there to check it out and do a couple of test prints.

I know the learning curve is going to be a little steep for me (see previous thread about MIS carts!) but my business is taking off and I need to learn. Verrrry excited. I will NOT junk my r1800, though, even though I have a serious problem with it's crap feed mechanism, I still love the way 3MK looks.

So....do all you 5D II owners use CS4?

thanks!
Sarah

Sarah,

All you need to do is go to this link:

http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

Get the Adobe DNG converter. You should be able to batch convert your
images to the DNG format then open them in Raw in your Photoshop CS.

We use CS4 if we want to convert 5d Markll images with CameraRaw. I
convert with LightRoom 2, so CS4 is optional.

Updates to Adobe Raw Converter (ACR) able to process files from newer dslr are not available to older version of Photoshop.

You can either get PS4 or, and a lot of people are doing this, get Lightroom 2.5 from Adobe with which you'll be able to process RAW files from any dslr and from which you can invoke your copy of Photoshop for any additional image adjustement if need be.

Cheers,

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I might go the DNG converter route, or I might purchase Lightroom. The CS4 upgrade would cost me about the same, though.

So....if you all had to choose between the two, would you go for Lightroom or upgrade to CS4? I realize these opinions are very subjective. Still, I'm interested.

I have CS3, Lightroom 2.3, and of course DPP! Since DPP came with the Canon 5D MkII, I figure thats a good place to start.

Sarah, You might consider this. With a Canon you got the DPP software? If
you are looking for a way to organize you images, and spend less money, why
not just use DPP to process you images. Buy ID Imager as your DAM and
continue to use your current copy of PS?

Another option would be to use an open source RAW converter. Raw
Therapee is one option that will work for 5D2 files, I believe.

Sarah,

I noted in one of your other posts where you asked about Lightroom versus
CS4. Personally much depends on how you like to operate. If you totally
happy with Photoshop CS then I would suggest you go with Lightroom. You
will have many of the new tools available in CS4¹s raw converter available
in Lightroom. You will find that you can do most of your global and now
some local processing in Lightroom then go to CS for all of your local
adjustments.

Lastly go for the DNG converter. Its free. It will get you up and running
quickly with your Canon 5d Mark II.

As pointed out by others you can use DPP but it doesn¹t really integrate
well with Photoshop. Converting all your Raw Images to 16bit tiff will
create a lot of very large files. Going the DNG route will allow you to
work on them in Photoshop CS Bridge.

In any event good luck. I hope I haven¹t confused you.

actually, if I were forced to spend some money, and I was already satisfied with my job/file organization, I'd get this for the image quality-

CS4 and Qimage to drive a HP Z3200-PS.
Qimage solved the 5D MK II high contrasts dots before anyone including
Canon solved it.
Some say Mike did a better job. He owns a 5D MK II too as I understand it.

I just moved to LR (I already have CS4) because with the 5dm2, and taking a lot of images, Bridge was just too slow. LR really does make my life a lot easier.

So, if money is an issue, I would go to LR2 now, and then upgrade to the NEXT release of CS (CS5?) which will probably come out in less than a year. Photoshop World is ongoing now; maybe some information will emerge.

Hi Sarah,

I'd go for Lightroom, certainly if you take a lot of photographs. It
really does almost everything photographers generally need and I think
can give you a better organised and more intuitive workflow. And each
major release has improved it considerably, while with PS since PS7 I've
felt they are more about making $s for Adobe and improvements have been
minor..

I still use PS for a few things, mainly some of the plug-ins I have -
for noise reduction, distortion correction and a few other things when
necessary. I also print from PS and a few other things. But none of
these needs CS4.

But if you are the kind of photographer who wants (and has the time) to
spend hours working on each photo and just loves those huge files with
lots of layers than PS4 is probably for you!

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
