Tyler,

I purchased some of the Exhibition Fiber and it looks good using K3. The
only issue seems to be in signing the print as pencil is not working. What
are you or others using to sign this paper or other glossy papers?

Thanks,

It's objectively good, good gamut, good dmax, etc.. We knew from many little
birdies when it first came out that it was rebranded Innova FibaPrint Ultra
Smooth Gloss, made for Epson on a slightly thicker base. Since many of us
had actually done a lot of testing on that paper previoulsy, the
introduction of the Epson version did not creata much new additional buzz or
user reviews. So you might search the various lists for comments on the
Innova.
Obviously it is a PK paper, and will require an ink set up that works well
on gloss, however that is done- UCK3pk, HP, perhaps the Claria inks, etc..
for 3rd party mono inks others here would have to comment.
When I made cheap sample sets on a Selenium MPS K7 set for people to see,
one of the two papers was the Innova version, and I thought it worked well,
the high OBA level tamed back the rosy ink hue a bit, and the surface was
nice.
I made color profiles of both the Epson, and the Innova, and they really
were identical in technical performance and appearance, within instrument
margin of error.
Subjectively, for me, other than the nice combo with the Selenium MPS set,
it was generally too blue, with an obvious high OBA content, for my taste.
In every other way though, it performs extremely well, and has a likable
photo surface.
Hope that helps,
Tyler

You can put some of the printer ink in a Rapidograph pen and use that
to sign the print.

On the advice of other artists with more experience on photo surfaces- Staedtler Pigment Liner pens.
As well as what Tina said...

Atlex.com has Exhibition Fiber paper on sale at a great price. 25 sheets of
8.5x11 is $14.79. Epson shows it for $39.00.

I like the X-ray glasses idea!

good inexpensive matt paper?

2009-10-31 by Mike Johnston

Hi,
I am an amateur photographer.
I have been using low end Epson printers with MIS ink for
around 5 years. I have been using Kirkland glossy photo paper - it is very
inexpensive and gives good results.

I am thinking of moving to a new printer and Piezography inks.
For the lower priced set ups I don't think these inks support glossy paper.

The question is, what is a good inexpensive matt (or luster?) paper I can
use?

Thanks
Mike Johnston

Sigma pigment micron pen - I like 03, a friend likes 05. Available in various widths artists supply stores or online. Looks a lot like pencil but writes well on glossy paper.

Mike,

For inexpensive matt paper you might want to try Red River paper, Aurora
Fine Art Natural. The blacks are not as good as HPR but makes a good testing
paper and gives very useable results. I think they have sample packs
available.

Hi Mike,
for a bright white paper, I've been very happy with PremierArt Premium Matte - but that's been replaced by Presentation Matte now, which is much lighter at 180gsm and only single-sided - but it should look at least as good as the old paper if you don't mind the lighter weight. It had good dmax for a mat paper.

Re: good inexpensive matt paper?

I can recommend a couple from Hawk Mountain.
Sharpwing Luster(an RC type paper) is similar to a semimatte:
http://www.hawkmtpaper.com/photo.htm
and
Sparrowhawk which is a semimatte, but not RC:
http://www.hawkmtpaper.com/grayhawk.htm

Both fit your criteria for being inexpensive and will except both dye or pigment inksets.

Re: good inexpensive matt paper?

I have been using Hawk Mountain, "Sparowhawk". It is duel sided, and have used it with MIS inks with my R1800. It works very well. Every bit as good as Epson's enhanced matte paper.

http://www.hawkmtpaper.com/grayhawk.htm#SH

For test prints, it is handy to use both sides. It is a good weight to feed in an Epson desktop too.

Switched from Epson Enhanced Matte to HP Matte Litho Realistic recently.
Naturel color instead of the EEM, heavier in weight (270 grams) and cheaper.
I expect it will keep its base color longer than EEM.
Not a Photorag quality but it prints nice.
There is a quad media preset for it on my Z3100-3200.
Can't tell what it does with Pi\ufffdzography inks but I do not expect
problems there.
