Welcome: I am also new to this site. It appears that my experience has been similiar to yours. Your comments made me think of Amadou Diallo, who published: MASTERING Digital Black and While. If you haven't read it, I encourage you to get it and "savor" it. I am complelled to quote from it.

You can own the most expensive equipment in the world, but there is simply no underestimating the difference that experience makes in producing fine art prints of consistant and high quality.(ch.6, p.257).

Sylvain, I noticed you used H.photorag. What weight was the paper? I am unsure just what maximum thickness or weight can be run through the 1400. Anyone!

Hi,

I'm using HPR 308g. I was also wondering whether the 1400 was able to take it or not, but no problem at all: it took the paper without comment :o)

You're right indeed.
But even if I have a quite long experience in the dark room, I'm still a newbie in digital printing...

That said, I'll jump in here. I have 30 years of experience in a darkroom and have a very difficult time relinquishing my printing to someone else. I have also just made the foray into digital. I've been gifted with an R300. Is it worth my while to get a CIS for it and use it as a dedicated BW printer? I have some funds available and could purchase another printer. What do you recommend? I'd like to do this once and I'm not sure where to start. If I won't be able to get professional and museum quality prints from this printer, please give me your opinion. For starters, I have an iMac with apple display, and am purchasing Spyder3 this week to get the monitor in order. I will need QTR to print, looking at that next, as well as sources for the CIS and ink.

Thanks all,
Anita

Re: [Digital BW] Re: New

2010-02-19 by R Craig Blackman

Anita, you rang my bell.
It was 1952 that I began my interest in photography. I was so excited. But two things interferred. The first instructor I had (in Gemany), must have been a former Nazi, because he turned me off so quickly. Second, when I discovered how allergic I am to chemicals...that did it.
So for the next fifty years or so, I took few pics, because, I didn't really like using another party. With the arrival of digital, I found a new beginning. I was so turned on to this technology. For the past seven years, I have been studying: reading, listening, travelling, and working hard at getting my hands around this business.
I offer a couple of comments. First, don't buy anything until you are absolutely sure it's the thing to do.
Read "Mastering Digital Black and White," by Amadou Diallo. It's magic for the eyes and for learning.
I have had several printers, all Epson, and have never been totally happy with any.
I use Photoshop CS4, having been using since PS 7. So with all this technology I STILL have a long way to go.

I just bought Spyder 3 Pro and had Spyder 2 pro. Not a lot of difference in the outcome (for me that is). I use a PC, and would prefer I had a Mac.

My printers in use are the 890 (very old, functional), the 2200, which is currently refusing to print. I loadedt with MIS inks and have had beaucoup problems. I just bought the 1400 which I bought to use BWO, but I am reluctant to install the BW inks. It's a great printer and you can buy it for $199.

I have read not to buy the CIS unless you do a lot of printing. I am not sure what that means. But I have decided not to buy the CIS; at least not at this time. I suggest you download QTR and try it. If you decide to keep it, then you pay a share fee of $50.00.

As for paper, I have tried most of them. I believe in the literature that Hahnemueller is the paper of choice. If it's to be B&W, then go with Matt, and them all. I settled on 300g.

Anyway, I hope I haven't been a bore.
Good luck
Craig

I use a CIS on Epson 2400 with C6C dual mix for Matte only printing. It works great, after a month of sitting I will do a couple head cleans and then print away. You will find the 1400 is even easier to keep going, for me CIS is the way to go, you will save alot on ink.

Thank you, I am planning to go CIS. I may try it out on an R300, because I have one and there seems to be a local source for an inexpensive "generic" CIS. I just ran out of ink anyway. Downloading QTR tomorrow....
