Being not that familiar with midi sucks but can anyone help? I read the manual and followed everything but for some reason, connecting any midi keyboard and pushing the learn button for the lowest note, I cannot play any other tones except the base note or maybe its the reference note. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance people.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance people. I need some more details. Does the MS-404 trigger correctly via Midi but the pitch does not change ? In this case I assume that something is wrong with the pitch CV between the Midi interface and the VCO (maybe a defective digital-to-analog converter). Did the MS-404 work before or did you buy it second hand ? If it helps: the MS-404 service manual is available on our website (> MANUALS > user's guides of older devices > MS-404). Best wishes Dieter Doepfer

I remember that I had the same problem a while ago. I read again in details the MS-404 manual two or three times and finally found that I was wrong when sending program changes to the MS- 404. If this can help you to solve this problem, try to send these PRG changes to your MS-404 : Key Assign Mode 'Highest Note' : PRG 15 Key Assign Mode 'Last Note' : PRG 16 Key Assign Mode 'reference note' : PRG 17 Key Assign Mode 'Stack Note' : PRG 18 Dimitri

I'm hoping that it isn't something that needs servicing. I did get it second hand and the person I got it from didn't say anything about it being defective. Do you know of any service centers in the San Francisco bay area that services your equipment? Thanks in advance. Mark

As I said, I'm not that versed in midi however I have been able to put it in learn mode and at least make lowest note. Other than that I don't know how to do what you are suggesting above i.e. Key Assign Mode, etc.. I do appreciate your help. If there is anything else you can think of I'd like to hear. p.s. I'm using either a Yamaha AN1X or a Nordlead 2 if that helps. regards, Mark

Hi Mark, > defective. Do you know of any service centers in the San Francisco > bay area that services your equipment? Thanks in advance. May be you should ask at Analogue Haven (although they are near LA). Or check the archives of analogueheaven (sic! with "e"):http://search.retrosynth.com/ah/ Florian

I'd recommed to look at the MCV4 manual (no typing error, I really mean "MCV4"). The MCV4 manual describes the different key assign modes in detail and how they are programmed via Midi program change messages while the MS-404/MCV4 is in the learn mode. Best wishes Dieter Doepfer

Hello there, my first time here , and i discover there are other people with same problem, Fortunately i resolved it following the tricks gived me by mail from mr doepfer. I sent a message of program change as it write on the user's manual, followed by a message of note on the machine now works at his best. peace --- In Doepfer_a100@yahoogroups.com, "Dimitri Pike" <wildtek.concept@...> wrote:

Hi, I am running in the same problem as Mark Kono did in June: My MS-404 worked fine with MIDI; I used it as MIDI-Slave of a MIDI keyboard or with an Alesis MMT-8 as Sequencer. Now I connected the MS-404 to Logic Pro and it shows the same behaviour as Mark described: MIDI-Note on produces a positive Gate and a Note CV of 0 Volt. I can change the reference note in MIDI-Learn Mode, but the Learn Mode appearently does not react on Program changes, because I cannot change e.g. the trigger polarity (prgchng #7 or #8). I usually have the EPROM with revision 1.05, but also tried Revision 1.03. I tried the reset described in the Manual of the MCV4(as recommended from Dieter): press and hold learn butt, switch on and hold until learn LED starts blinking; after that switch off an on again. But it did not work: after switching on with pressed Learn-button the Learn-LED never started blinking. So how can I make the MS-404 react on MIDI again? Florian PS: The MS-404 works fine under control of an external CV in. There is no voltage change happening already at the output of the D/A-converter. Hardware defect in the D/A is possible, but I don't assume so, because the Gate is working.

Hi, I could solve the problem by an ugly trick (this is a "don't do this at home" description): First I removed the EPROM and switched the MS-404 on and after some seconds switched it off again. I replugged the EPROM and tried the MS-4040, but the action hadn't changed anything. Then I removed the EPROM again, switched the MS-404 on and pressed my fingers on the soldering side of the pcb on the pins of the processor. The fingers seem to act like a pulldown resistor. At least the internal RAM of the processor seems to have been resetted by this action. Now the learn mode accepted Program changes again and I could set the assignmode to last note again. Nevertheless it seems, that the processor of the MIDI-interface MS-404 reacted wrong on some MIDI messages from Logic while the interface was in the bootup phase. Florian, very strange. I have no idea why this solved the problem. The contents of the internal RAM should have no effect on the function as it is filled with certain values during power on. The reset during power on causes the software to start at a certain position (reset position) and the contents of the RAM should not matter. I'll send a copy to Christian. Maybe he has an idea for this strange behaviour. Dieter
