re: Doepfer style front panels

2006-07-24 by izimizam

Hi everyone

i need some advice on taking some modules i have in
eurorack format (but with very dodgy custom painted panels) but i want
to make the front panels identical to doepfer stylisation , using
there font and the same aluminium ? can anyone advise on the font and
how i would do this. The modules i have are euro rack and the same
voltage but my idea was to remove the old home made panels and have
some doepfer stylised ones made (so they fit in with my system)

Can anyone advise on the process ? whats the best way to do this ,
measure the panels and then convert in something like front panel
designer ?and order them or ordeer blanking panels ? and diy ? is there
one stop solution ?

cheers

jack

I've had great luck with Front Panel Express, here:
http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/

Just get the measurements from the Doepfer "mechanical details" page,
stick them into Front Panel Designer, and take some time getting the
labeling right. Panels come out very similar to Doepfer's and are
always delivered exactly on time.

The FPE panels I have are slightly lighter in color than most of my
Doepfers, and I really didn't bother getting the fonts the same,
since I already have such a hodgepodge of front panel styles on my
machine.

Jack,

you find a detailed description of the front panel measures on our website:
www.doepfer.com > PRODUCTS > A-100 > Mechanical details.

For the printing a font called "Avant Garde" is used. As far as I know
that's a Windows standard font.

Concerning the measures within a front panel: the standard vertical distance
between the (normally 5) potentiometers or sockets is 20.32 mm. Even the
horizontal distance between sockets and potentiometers is 20.32 mm. But this
is valid only for standard front panels (e.g. A-120, A-122, A-130, A-131,
A-138 and similar). For special front panels (e.g. A-113, A-107) the
measures are different. If mainly sockets are on the front panel (e.g.
A-180, A-160, A-161) the vertical distance is 13.55 mm.

cheers for the link , i'm guessing doepfer blanking panels would be a perfect colour match ?

hi folks
am i right in think A-188-1D with 4096 stages BBD is capable of everything the rest are ? (those with less stages ?)

no, check Ingo's samples:
http://www.selfoscillate.de/

The smaller ones are best for flanging and karplus strong.
I have the 512 and 4096, i love both but the 512 is nicer/ more useful to
me. the 4096 is an echo. I really think I'll get a 256 next. Really I
think the smaller ones have a more flexible palette of sounds, but of course
not the longer delays.
By the time you get to 4096 it starts sounding digital in a way, more like a
circuit bent unit unless you filter it, not a bad thing, I love it, but the
smaller ones have a much richer, thicker sound.
best,
pH

I have the 1024 (1 second) which does a very nice job
of chorus and flange effects. Also good for boingy echo
sounds, but not at higher delay times then around
150 milliseconds.
After that you begin to hear the clock noise,
that means you must filter it out with a low pass
filter with a sharp slope. From what I've been told
you should be able to get long delay times with no clock
noise up to maybe 2 seconds with the 4096 stage.
Not sure if the 4096 does as good a job with tight
modulated sounds. My 2 cents......

AW: [Doepfer_a100] A-188 ?

2006-08-01 by hardware@doepfer.de

No. The short delay times are not available with the longer BBD circuits.

These are the shortest delay times for the BBD circuits used for A-188-1:

MN3006 (128 stages) @ 200kHz: 0.32 ms
MN3009 (256 stages) @ 200kHz: 0.64 ms
MN3004 (512 stages) @ 200kHz: 1.28 ms
MN3007 (1024 stages) @ 200kHz: 2.56 ms
MN3008 (2048 stages) @ 100kHz: 10.24 ms
MN3005 (4096 stages) @ 100kHz: 20.48 ms

The frequencies (100/200kHz) are the max. clock frequencies of the BBD
circuits specified in the corresponding data sheet. In reality a bit higher
frequencies can be used (e.g. 150 kHz instead of 100 kHz or 300 kHz instead
of 200 kHz) but the short delay times are possible only with the small BBD
circuits as one cannot go beyond a certain clock frequency.

Best wishes
