A138 mixer distortion issue

A138 mixer distortion issue

2006-10-06 by untiedstates

I have an A-138 exponential (audio) mixer and it seems to be clipping
any signal I put into it at any level setting - I A/B-ed it with the
A-138 polarizing mixer I have which is very clean in comparison.

I can't tell if this just happened recently or has been like this.

A couple things: I've been using headphones with the mixer, and
sometimes have clipped signals on purpose for effect (it seems to clip
standard levels if it goes over 7)

Anyone ever have this kind of problem and any solutions - or is my
mixer just fried?

thanks - bryan

hello,
never noticed something like this with my a138's.
best regards,
bakis.

Hi Bryan,

> A couple things: I've been using headphones with the mixer,

My guess is that this is what has probably caused the problem - almost
certainly it is not designed to drive such a load, and I suspect the
chip would run pretty hot if you did so, and it has probably just given
up the ghost. If you have any soldering skills, it would be quite
simple to replace the chip to find out, and much cheaper than a new
module!

Re: [Doepfer_a100]Quad DSR

I have a Quad ADSR that I have had for a month now and only got around
to playing with it seriously today.

To be honest I know synthesis quite well, but found this to be quite
confusing, also for the fact that I couldn't get it to work ( never had
an ADSR in modular form before) the main reason was that I am using the
pdf manual and didnt realise the layout has changed. In the manual the
Gate is the first input, but on mine it is the 5th input?

Any reason for the change?

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the input... unfortunately I had asked on this very group
about using headphones before and got a response from someone else
that they used headphones directly from the Doepfer all the time and
it worked great...

Well, no crying over spilt milk from me.. but the fact is that it is
blown and I'm just replacing it with a polarizing mixer because I like
those much better in the end.

I'll fix this one eventually, though.. just no more "convenient"
headphone monitoring :(

best,
Bryan

AW: [Doepfer_a100] A138 mixer distortion issue

2006-10-09 by hardware@doepfer.de

First of all: check if the the bus cable connectors are installed correctly.
E.g. if only +12V or -12V are applied clipping will occur. Otherwise it
sounds like a defective A-138b. There is only one cheap integrated circuit
on the pc board (TL062 for version 1, LM324 for version 2) that has to be
replaced to solve the problem. I cannot imagine that anything else could
cause the fault.

Best wishes

Re: TB303 filter

i have an a103, but i did no comparison with a tb303 yet.
the a103 is no exact tb303 filter clone, it just uses the
same filter technique, but different parts.
the problem with the tb303 is that not only the filter is
responsible for the special tb303 sound. especially the
sequencer with its strange glide function is almost as
important as the filter itself.

Driving a headphone with the A-138 cannot destroy the module as there is a
protection resistor in the output line. But the audio level will be very
poor unless you use high impedance head phones (>1kOhm).
