Accutronics reverb tank with an A199 Spring Reverb.

Accutronics reverb tank with an A199 Spring Reverb.

2008-01-28 by ilanode

Hi list, a guy from the analoguehaven forum is using an Accutronics
9AB3C1B reverb tank with it's A199 Spring Reverb. I'd like to try it
myself, yet, I'm not sure which tank to choose.

There are tanks available having the following impedances:
Input (2nd digit Accutronics code): A = 10, B =190, C = 240; D= 310, E
= 800, F = 1925 Ohm;
Output (3rd digit): A = 600, B = 2575, C = 12000 Ohm.

Possible connectors (6th digit)are: A) Input grounded/Output grounded;
B) Input
grounded/Output insulated; C) Input insulated/Output grounded; D)
Input insulated/Output insulated.

Which impedances and connectors should be chosen? Is the above
mentioned choice actually the best option? TIA, Ingo

I've found some more info in the web on the reverb tank issue (see
links below). I think the original A199 tank has the following specs:
input impedance of 190 ohm; output impedance of 2575 ohm; an insulated
input and grounded output.
Can anyone confirm this, please! TIA, Ingo

Our reverb tank has 150 Ohm input and 2250 Ohm output impedance with
insolated in/outputs. The Accutronics tank with 190 and 2575 Ohm should run
with the A-199 (without obligation).

Best wishes

of course the length of the springs and the number of springs are also
part of the sound, but i have found that even identical specs but a
different year can make a *huge* difference in sound. basically you have
to try before you buy if possible and check if there's enough hi end,
even up to 8kHz or more. that's more or less a sign that everything is ok

Maybe it's not necessary but in the tanks we use for the A-199 the inputs
and outputs are insolated.

Speaking on a possible reverb tank change: I just want to point out
that the module works fine with it's original tank. The idea is simply
to obtain a much longer decay - different sound might be fine but is
not the purpose.

In case I wrote anything that suggests I don't expect a sonic change
when changing the reverb tanks, I'm sorry. It's my poor command on any
language ;) I have not mentioned my sonic expectations.

My last message intention was to point out that the whole idea does
NOT stem from thinking the original reverb tank crap. Actually I think
it a good module and everyone on this list should seriously consider
to get one.
Asking for impedances and connectors (my original mail) should just
ensure that module and reverb tank meet each other's tech. specs.

believe me, any accutronics tank will sound *very* different. but also
other belton tanks are worth checking out. they also have bigger models
which again sound different from accutronics

I would *love* to be able to try out some other Belton tanks, but
getting hold of them appears to me to be a *major* problem - unless you
are an OEM ordering multiple units at a time, I very much doubt Belton
will be interested (in supplying one-offs). So, if you know somewhere
who might have a selection of Belton tanks of different delay times,
no. of springs and impedances, and be willing to sell in individual
units, please tell!!

Tim

(And yes, a few years ago I called the UK distributor for Belton, in
the UK, and was greeted with a question something like: 'and how many
thousand would you like'...!)

Sorry, I got my other Beltons on eBay, I don't know another way.

Hi David, learned from the A.Haven list that you've ordered an
Accutronics reverb tank. Pls report back your findings. Best rgds, Ingo

Will do. I should have it in about a week. Time permitting, I'll try
to post a comparison between the standard Doepfer tank and the
Accutronics next weekend.

Hey, you gave me ideas, I just found 2 accutronics rvb tanks in an old
guitar amp and a Wersi organ (with approx 35cm long springs !!) I'll
wire them to the A199 and post some sound examples.
Cheers,
Max.

Re: Accutronics reverb tank with an A199 Spring Reverb.

As promised, here is a comparison between the standard Doepfer tank
and the Accutronics:

http://www.distantdimensions.com/reverb_tank_demo.mp3

1. The first sound is the dry source.
2. Next is the 100% wet Doepfer/Belton tank with no feedback or
emphasis.
3. Third is the Belton tank again with 50% emphasis and feedback just
shy of oscillation.
4. Fourth is the Accutronics tank with no feedback or emphasis.
5. Lastly is the Accutronics with slightly too much feedback, which I
turned down as it got too hot.

As you can hear, there is some buzzing in the signal from the
Accutronics. I haven't made any attempt to find an ideal placement
for the unit yet, so the noise may be a result of that, or possibly
the long audio cable which is hanging down directly behind several
Doepfer power supplies. Hopefully it can be resolved easily, rather
than being a consequence of selecting the wrong tank specifications.
Fingers crossed...

The two tanks have completely different sounds, and I'm happy to have
both.
