What is the optimum number of oscillators for a Doepfer system? Can a polyphonic A100 system be realised? If i have VCF3 & VCF5 filters in my system now, which filter do you recommend i add next? Thanks. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

hello michael i would recomend you many different oscillators for nice colorful sound. polyphony can be realized in different ways. easy : just tune 2 or 3 oscs to a nice chord and use a single cv gate signal to play it. this way you cant change the chord... difficult : use an analog sequencer (or many sequencers) to play several oscs at different pitches to form a chord. this might be difficult to get going but can be very rewarding cause very nice poly sequences will come up. filter are never enough for my taste, i use them as oscilators as well ...from the doepfer collection there is not one that i wouldnt like im sure ! > What is the optimum number of oscillators for a Doepfer system? Well that would very much depend on the type of patch you're typically going to want to make. In general i think that you can not have enough oscillators in a modular. I've currently got 5 ( 1* a-111, 3*a-110, 1*planB model15) and am looking at a couple more, probably another a-111, two more model 15's, a MFB triple vco and the new livewire vco. Oh and obviously the dynamic doepfer vco and the quadrature thru-zero vco once they become available ,-) If you do a lot of drones or single-pitch sounds you can also use the doepfer quad lfo as a sound-source, without frequency CV however. I've got two of those for that purpose. > Can a polyphonic A100 system be realised? Yes. But you'll need a) a MIDI->CV interface that handles polyphony as well as b) quite a lot of modules (at least one VCO, VCF, VCA + ENV per voice) > If i have VCF3 & VCF5 filters in my system now, which filter do you > recommend i add next? > Thanks. > My faves are the Wasp-Filter, the SSM-Filter, the vatrol multimode and the moog 48 db. I'm quite confident the diode filter is also cool. Best, d

If you just want typical polyphonic synth sounds (juno/ jupiter) I think an easier/ cheaper way to get this would be to use an inexpensive poly such as the MKS-20 or the Korg Poly 800 for the polyphonic sound source and then process the sound with the doepfer system. Right answer, but wrong technical name: MKS-20 is Rolands piano-expander from that time, MKS-30 (vulgo JX3P) is assumingly what you thought about. Btw: used market prices of the MKS-30 are awfully expensive at the moment (350 Euros and more!). Poly800 is ok as polyphonc oscillator source. Florian

Actually I was thinking of the MKS-50. The Alpha Juno rack. Good catch, because the MKS-30 is def. NOT what this guy is seeking!
