a190 problem

a190 problem

2008-08-15 by macko

hello

i've just installed my new a190, but, unfortunately, i have some
problems..
i've connected a keyboard to a190, but there is no response. it is
written in the manual that gate and pitch are pre-installed on the bus,
but pushing keys effects with nothing. no LEDs response. only when i
switch my modular on clock and gate LEDs pulse. when pushing keyboard -
nothing.
am i doing something wrong? maybe there is a calibration or midi
learning procedure?
i'd appreciate any help.

best regards,
maciej

Re: A-188-1 BBD 4096 problem (probably just me)

2008-08-15 by Chidra_100@iinet.net.au

I suspect that my bbd is damaged, is there a sure way to check if it
it working properly?

I was having a go at the standard flanger patch from the bbd manual
(page 12) and after playing around with the variables, it seems to not
giving a bbd output...

Now repatching it doesn't seem to affect the sound at all...??

Any advise would be great since i cannot fault find too well as i was
only just figuring out how the module works.

Thanks...

There is a midi learning procedure. Check the manual on the Doepfer website. It seemed complicated to me at first, but now after doing it a few times it is easy. Your keyboard probably isn't transmitting on the midi channel the A-190 is set to.

This brings up a minor A-190 problem I am having. Mine doesn't seem to hold the midi channel. It will change when powered off. I haven't tested enough to figure out if it is every time it is powered off or if it always reverts to the same channel. I just switch to the midi learning mode and it picks up the channel and works fine.

hi

thanks for your response.
now, i've tried this - i switch into performance mode, than i push one
key and the pitch is working. but still - the sound is still playing and
i'd like to play it from the beginning every time i push the key. how to
make it? i've spent a lot of time on it, but still don't know how to do
it.

thanks,
maciej

hello,

it is difficult to say what is wrong with your module.
please do some checks on your module, maybe we can
figure it out.

do you hear the input signal at the mix output?

when turning the clock all the way down in frequency,
do you hear the clock noise at the bbd output?

when turning the feedback to maximum, can you hear
any self oscillation at the bbd output?

can you hear any bbd signal at the mix output?

is the bbd chip (mn3005 or mn3205)
sitting nicely in his socket?

best wishes and good luck :-)

hello maciej,

i think it is best when you contact matthias marass, he is the
man for the a190. please check out message 14722 for details.

best wishes

Ok chips are secure in their sockets. (3005)

Feeding any signal into the audio in has mic output.

Although, mix to bbd out 100% and the bbd switch at middle, has signal
out, polarity - or + at full ddb mix has no output.

Note CV2 in is triangle output of A-145

Delay clock makes no sound or jitter. from any polarity settings on
bbd, mix or either.

It was working 5 min before i sent the email yesterday, it seems as
though something has failed internally, maybe ic ?

I only has the A-145 input on cv, it just stopped...

If there is any specific way to test the ic chips and board, let me
know and i will have a go.
Replacements??

:(

Michael

sadly i don't own the service manual for the a188/1 yet,
so i cannot give you an advice how to do specific tests.
to be honest, i think you have to send the module in for
repair, as i have no idea what could be the problem.

dieter is on holidays right now, so we cannot ask him
until end of next week, maybe he as a better idea than me.

sorry and best wishes

Re: [Doepfer_a100] Re: A-188-1 BBD 4096 problem (probably just me)

2008-08-18 by Chidra_100@iinet.net.au

Thats no problem, I appreciate your assistance regardless.

Do you know if it is possible for any specific waveforms or even
possibly a mixed exponential output / input as controlled voltage to
bbd (cv1/cv2) to perhaps cause damage to the chip(3005?)

I suspect this may have caused it if that can be the case, as i recall
using an exponential mixer output quote allot on that suspect patches
that day...maybe.
Anyway, I will email Dieter and await a response upon his return. :)

Thanks again

Regards

Michael

as long as the voltage comes from an a100 module (including
exponential mixers also) it cannot exceed +12 volts an
consequently cannot damage the a188/1.

Reassuring.

Thanks.

Re: a190 problem

2008-08-18 by techmaster242

It sounds like you are playing a VCO with the A-190, but what you are
hearing must be incredibly disappointing right now. You hit a key and
the VCO changes pitch, but the sound doesn't stop when you let up the
key. You'll notice, as long as you are pressing a key on the
keyboard, the gate light on the A-190 will light up, and when you
release the key, that light immediately goes out. That's your gate
signal, and it's up to you what happens with that signal. Generally,
you route that gate signal to an ADSR (which is internally done on the
bus), and what the ADSR will do is convert that boring on/off gate
signal into something much more dynamic. But, instead of one useless
audio signal, now you have two useless signals, audio and CV. What
you need at this point, is a VCA (A-131) that will "pinch" that audio
signal based on what that CV signal is doing. You route the ADSR
signal and the VCO's audio signal into the VCA, and suddenly, when you
press a key on the keyboard, you hear a sound, and when you let up off
the key, the sound stops. Then, you can turn knobs on that ADSR to do
things like have the note play for a while even after you release the
key, and slowly fade out to silence. That is why the VCO does not
immediately shut off when you release a key. If the sound stopped at
that point, you would have a boring sound coming out of that synth,
and zero flexibility. It kind of sucks that you have to buy all those
modules just to get a playable synth, but once you have them all,
you'll be glad that it works the way it does! I just got my modular
to the point that it is a playable instrument, and it required all of
this:
A-190 Midi input
A-110 VCO
A-140 ADSR
A-145 LFO
A-131 Logarithmic VCA
A-102 Low Pass Filter

The A-145 and A-102 aren't "required", but you will hate your modular
until you get them because it will sound BORING and won't have that
fat sound that you're probably looking for. That's pretty much a
basic setup, and you're not going to get much done until you have at
least those. For now, you press a note, and the VCO simply shifts to
that pitch.

Ingo,

thank you for your help. Unfortunately Matthias is on holiday for 2 weeks.
So I'll try to help:

- Does the Gate LED on the A-190 work as it should (i.e. "on" when a key is
operated, "off" when released) ?
- Pay attention that a VCO always outputs a tone. You have to add a VCF or
VCA controlled by an ADSR to mute the tone
- Did you check the Gate polarity of the A-190 ? Maybe it's reverse

Best wishes

AW: [Doepfer_a100] Re: A-188-1 BBD 4096 problem (probably just me)

2008-08-25 by yahoo@doepfer.de

Michael,

with these settings there should be an output signal available:

audio input = VCO output (e.g. A-110 sawtooth)
Delay Clock: ~ 7
Level: ~ 5..7
Feedback: ~ 5
Mix: fully CW
BBD polarity switches: + or - (not center)

If under these settings no signal appears at the output the module has to be
repaired. For the test no external CV is necessary.

In addition you may test the switching contact of the ext. Clk In socket:
Connect the Clk out socket to the ext. Clk In

Best wishes
