Linear fm modulation amount...

Linear fm modulation amount...

2001-12-03 by bakis Sirros

hi list,
i have created a patch(that you will be able to hear
in a few days on the modular-planet)using my A155
sequencer for modulating(with linear fm)one of myA111
vco.this a111 vco then modulates,via the saw
output,(again with linear fm)my other a111 vco.the
result is interesting but i came up with even more
interesting sounds when i changed manually in real
time the LINEAR FM knob on my second a111.so,i was
wondering ,can i simulate this realtime variation in
the linear fm modulation by using an A132 DUAL LOW
COST VCA patched between the modulator(my first a111)
and the carrier(the second a111)?all i need to do is
control the a132 with an a140 adsr,..right??
waiting for ideas...

Of course you can do this. But why use a Envelope: much more interesting
should be the Sequencer to modulate this VCA. Alternatively you might use
the sequencer clock to trigger a S&H which is fed by a fast LFO. This
results in a renadom like, but nevertheless regular repeating sequence.

BTW: controlling the linear-FM Input with the Sequencer is not that
sense-making, since this input is DC decoupled. You will have a kind off
glide effect to and from the Sequencers tuning back to the standard tuning
of the VCO.

Hi bakis

If you have the schematics of the VCO-110 you will find a capacitor inline
in the Linear FM Input. Something like that:

                    capacitor
                   /
Input jack o------||---+-----to linear mod In of CEM 3340
                       |
                       |
                       -
                      | |
                      | | <...Resistor
                      | |
                       -
                       |
                       |
                      Ground

This capacitor will let through AC but will stop DC. This is necessary,
since a possible DC-offset of a modulation signal would detune the VCO
instead of adding only a fast vibrato. Your Sequencer sends out only DC...

hi,
thanks, but i think that when i connected the output of
the a155 to the lin.fm input of the a111 i heard
audible results(thought,they sounded like pitch
slides...)
as you explained ,the dc signals do not pass
thru,so,how did i hear these pitch slides?shouldn't i
hear nothing??

Hi bakis

Yes that is exactly what is to be expected: The Lin-FM input realizes a
change of the input voltage, so the pitch will change too; but then the
input voltage stays the same: it is a DC; this will be "removed", the pitch
of the VCO slides back to the original tuning.

BTW: I drew the schematic wrong. There should be a capacitor down to ground
and afterwards a resistor inline to the VCO CV-input
