Hi all :

>People have asked before and I am now agreeing with them, how about
>a new VCO?

What Doepfer should do now is to do a MAC editor for their A-112 sampler
that I have unused and disconnected,Did they know that almost eveybody in
the music community uses mac ?( well nowadays that is changing).

I think there is a big diference between early Doepfer modules and 3 years
to now modules .
Early ones were (and are) poor, terrible sounding ones.

A-110 osc is very poor,I own 3 of them and I only use them for X-modulation
or FM sounds ,lead sounds with them are crap (I wonder if anybody knows from
what synth they cloned them ,

The envelope is bad as hell ( closer to the Korg ms ones ,to me the worst
enveolpes ever) maybe they cloned from them, and has no body or punch
compared to the AS ones or an SH -101 per example.

and the 121 multimode filter is simply the WORST sounding filter I have ever
heard, and can´t be compared to other brand ones.

I´m not bashing Doepfer as I have 6 panels if their modules but some of them
are the WORST out there

Others more modern are very good ,(maybe because are designed by other
people or cloned from better machines) : WASP filter, frequency
shifter,A-142,Formant filter, etc. and the upcoming beefed X-pander filter
wich seems incredible.

That is my modest opinion , not another OSC from Doepfer ,they wouldn´t beat
other brand ones(MOTM,AS)
What they should do is to research new ones as I´m glad they changed their
Behringer like tactic ( Get
other brand product and do it cheaper )

>What about a new style ADSR, like the korgs have 'Break Point'
>and 'slope' on their old ones.,

NO please , a mix between Korg and Doepfer envelopes ( to me worst ever )
will be a bad taste joke

Hans,

Email me if you want to get rid of your A112.

hello hans,

well i don't agree with you about several things like
the a121 and the doepfer envelopes. but that is all a
matter of taste.

i'd like to see another doepfer vco, because there is
a good change of improval amongst the old doepfer vco's.

best wishes

hi list,
well,i also have many doepfer
envelopes(a140,141,142)and i like them very much!in
fact i can't see anything wrong on them!they have very
fast envelope times!!not like the ms20 ones...as for
the a121 to me sounds like the filter in my yamaha
cs15(sold now...).i like it's sound a lot!about newer
filters...i have most of them and i could nkit say
that they are better than the older ones at all!and
who said that doepfer copied their vco's or a121 or
envelopes from any particular synth???
i,too, have AS vco's and the rs100,rs110 filters and
these are good, too, but not better in sound at
all(well, only the repeat function of the AS
envelopes-but these envelopes are more expensive than
the a140's,anyway) from the doepfer modules...i maybe
like the a110 and the a120,a121's sound more than the
sound of the AS modules...
also, you can't compare the a100 with the cheap
behringer products...
bakis.

I have to disagree with you on these
points. I suggest turning down the
output or inputs on all of your
modules in a patch. I used to feel the
way you did until I realized my entire
signal path was distorted due to cranking
up the inputs and outputs too high.

I agree that Doepfer could add another
VCO to the catalog. Personally, my
favorite VCO of all time is the Programmable
Complex Waveform Generator Model 259 from
the Buchla 200 series.

Re: not other OSC and worst modules

Although I prefer the A111, the A110 isn't really that bad. And I
like the A121 (especially the band pass filter), but not for
everything. I mean, I like mustard, but not in my coffee.. mostly
(if you catch my drift).

As for the A126 Frequency Shifter, I can't agree on that it's whack.
That said, I wish A126 had a lower shift register, as well as sine
and cosine inplimentation, but that would drive the price right up.
Correctly used, the A126 can add weirdness you'd be hard pressed to
find elsewhere.

Personally, I'd like to see a new dedicated wavetable oscillator
(i.e. no sampling option) with better and more visual control over
waveform selection than the A112 offers. For example, the old
Digisound VCDO, although inexpensive and slightly less than elegant,
used 4 groups containing 8 waveforms each. CV inputs for group and
waveform manipulation allowed for precise waveform selection, as well
as made the job of wavetable modulation quite easy.

Kevin

Hi folks,

well, I can´t agree with Hans´ worst-module-opinion in every point.

A-110 VCO (I don´t really like it, too.)
pros: nice sound; cheap; octave switch
cons: tune range isn´t large enough; no fine tune, no lin FM input
(although it is possible to add this function (and soft sync) by
modding. There are solder points on the PCB for this functions!).
BTW: They were cloned from Moog The Rogue, as far as I know.

For my person, I´d like to see another VCO from Doepfer, too. It may be
only a modified A-110 but with without the cons. Call it 110b or 110x
(for "extended").

RS90 from ASys is a nice one, but I really, really HATE tunig it!

A-121 multimode filter: I really love it as it can sound quite sharp and
aggressive. Although it is a -12dB/oct filter, I prefer it to the A-122,
which is based on the same chip (CEM 3320) and has a slope of -24dB/oct.

A-140 ENV: quick quick quick. great for fast sequences.

 >Others more modern are very good ,(maybe because are designed by other
 >people or cloned from better machines) : WASP filter
The WASP filter clone was originally designed by Jürgen Haible and
"borrowed" by Doepfer. Check Mr. Haible´s website, he´s a real
synth-DIY-freak: http://home.debitel.net/user/jhaible/hj.html

freq shifter: Well, the frequency shifter is a real nice electronic toy,
but the one from Doepfer is quite wack. Check the one from ASys (forgot
the name), which is quite expensive...

my two cents (EUR and $) ...

cheers,
Paul

hi ethan,
same for me,too...i didn't realize from the start
that, with a modular system ,you have the option of
distorting the input in various stages of the signal
path.

also, i would have bought an a112 (maybe 2) a long time ago if it had a mac

Re: not other OSC and worst modules

I like the A112. You need the Waird "Wave 256" application to create
wavetables, and Doepfer's A112 application to load the module.
Unfortunately, both applications are PC based.

Also, and as long as I'm at it, the proposed wavetable oscillator
should also not require a gate like the A112, but instead should have
a reset feature. Another feature could be variable interpolation
(morphing) of the waveforms... and voltage controlled as well.

I've got to go wash my hands.

Kevin

Having compared all 3 circuits I'm surprised so much fuss was made
about this (especially in the Synth-DIY list) - both JH and Doepfer
versions are copies of the same thing, with few changes, so they are
bound to look similar. To my mind the only possible criticism that
could be levelled at Doepfer would be for having used the _idea_ for
making a Wasp filter clone in the first place, but since JH (to my
knowledge) doesn't sell modules, he doesn't lose out anyway. (And the
major 'addition' in the JH filter isn't even in the A-124.)

As they say, my 2 cents.

Tim

as far as i know, the designer of the wasp filter
collaborated with doepfer for the design of the a124.

Hi Hans

There is no editor for th A112. There is only a sample dump loader. You may
assumingly do the same job with every other sample dump loader or simply
any sequencer. The A112 was never offered with an editor[*] and from the
beginning it was said that there will be no developement for some computer
software. So if you were so stupid (sorry that I am getting that rigid) to
buy a module, that was known to you as not being usable, no one will be
able to help you. Would you buy wintertyres for a Volvo if you own a Saab -
only because both are funny northern european car manufactureres?

[*] The available software is an testing tool from their hardware testing
technician. Try to find any other manufacturer, that gives the testing
software to his customers!

Sorry to say, but according to a person how is involved in merketing
research at a well known music software house which was acquired by Apple
recently, the Mac is used by around 9 to 12 percent in the MIDI-orientated
music community.

?????????????????? An envelope cannot have punch or something like that. It
all depends on what the envelope is controlling. The same envelope on a
A130 will "sound" completely different to the result on a A131. All
envelopes that are not calculated in a microprocessor are based on
loading/unloading a capacitor. There is no difference in the curve an
capacitor is loading between any manufacturer.

What may be different is the VCA of an Korg or an SH101 or the kind of
patch that YOU are wiring on an A100. So talking about the "punch of an
envelope", you should complain about yourself, that you do not understand
what you are doing, but not about Doepfer or Korg or Roland.

Oehm, urps, any around 30 other synths on the world use the same circuit (I
don't mean the chip, I mean the schematic), so tell me the difference. Or
is it again, that you don't know what you are talking about... ?

Hi,
I agree!
I think the a100 envelopes are very nice, perhaps Hans hasn't
noticed they have a range switch :-D
Trying to make a 'punchy' sound using the wrong range??..oh well.
The multimode filter is a nice filter, but really depends what sound
you are after, that is why we have so many different filters....they
are DIFFERENT for a reason!

John.

Punchy ADSRs

2003-03-26 by Andreas Lindholm

As for punch in ENVs I think it can be called punch. I personally define a
punch ENV as a fast one that can make you filter sweep fast enough to make a
snap or click. That is punchy for me. Filters that can't go that fast like
the VCADSR is what I call sloppy and punchless ;)

I think the standard doepfer ADSR qualifies for punchy. The Kurzweil K2000
synths have sloppy envs as an example of the opposite.
