If the delaytimes in these exmples these are the shortest possible 
delaytimes, it would be very unsatisfying. I would need MUCH(!) shorter 
ones! For classic Flanging and for envelope controlled notch filter 
stuff, and definitely for Karplus Strong Synthesis or similar.

The shortest delaytime corresponds to the highest possible frequency of 
a bbd-notchfilter or the highest possible frequency of an karplus strong 
oscillator.


And btw. I do not understand, what is the role of the BBD in the first 
two expamples

  BBD_Source_1.mp3: a short sample recorded with the A-112
  BBD_Source_2.mp3: an 8 note sequence made with A-100 modules (A-110
                    + A-105 + A-140 controlled by a MAQ16/3)

Florian,

the shortest possible delay time is calculated from these facts:

max. clock frequency of the BBD used in the module (from data sheet): 200kHz
BBD length: 2048
-> shortest delay time = 10 ms

Maybe we could offer the module even with a 1024 or 512 BBD circuits to
obtain 5ms or 2.5ms shortest delay. I will see if the BBD manufacturer
offers pin-compatible BBDs with 1024 or 512 stages.

I also will see what happens if the BBD is clocked with a frequency beyond
200kHz. Maybe the data sheet is conservative and frequencies beyond 200kHz
are possible.


The first two examples are simply the original signals used in the following
examples to know and hear which audio source was used. I think it is useful
the know the unprocessed audio signal too.

hello dieter,

please correct me if i'm wrong, but with the clock at 200 khz
the minimum delay time should be around 5 ms.
at least this is what the old panasonic data sheets say.

regarding the delay time knob, i'd prefer that the
delay time decreases when the cv increases, especially
when an 1v/oct input is available. would be better for
karplus-strong-synthesis.

The 1V/Oct input should be trimmed for this control "direction"; a 
reverse control does not have clean 1v/Oct necessarily (at least no 
patch where it is required comes to my mind).

Analogue Systems has 2 diff. BBD based modules (RS310 Reverb/Chorus 
and RES120 Comb Filter/Flanger). So it's due to the restriction of 
the chips used?? You need a diff. BBD design to achieve a Comb 
Filter and Chorus?? If so, I'm sure there's a market for both a 
Chorus and Flanger module even though personally I'm more interested

Ingo,

you are right. My last statement was a bit wrong. The high speed VCO goes up
to 200 kHz, but the resulting BBD clock is 100kHz. The reason for the half
frequency is the required 2-phase clock for the BBD chip (2 clock signals
with 50% duty cycle and opposite polarity). In our circuit this is realized
with a simple flip-flop that halves the incoming frequency (200kHz HSVCO
frequency -> 100kHz BBD clock). In other circuits even inverters or special
BBD driver circuits are used.

So the HCVSO goes up to 200kHz, resulting in 100kHz BBD clock and
consequently 10.24ms delay time.

My comment to exact 1V/Oct high speed VCO:

To speak the truth we have problems to develop an affordable high speed VCO
that goes up to the desired frequencies (at least 200kHz for BBD and digital
delay applications or 1MHz for SC-filter). We tried several designs:
lin-to-log converter with following precision linear VCO, current controlled
VCO with logarithmic current source, "normal" VCO with PLL and some more.
Each solution has it's advantages and disadvantages. The best result
(concernig 1V/Oct precision) is the standard audio VCO with a PLL but it has
a very bad response time and cannot be used for fast changes of the delay
time (which is essential from my point of view). So we will pick up Florians
suggestion and put a so-so 1V/Oct HSVCO into the BBD module but offer an
external clock input (normalled to the internal HSVCO) that enables to drive
the unit from an external precision HSVCO (I hope we will be able to design
a better - but even more expensive - HSVCO in the near future).

My comment to Karplus/Strong and similar:

For these applications I'd prefer the announced universal AD/processor/DA
module. Beside the much better audio quality this module will allow to
adjust the memory length (this is fixed for the BBD module zu 2048).
Consequently the delay time is not only determined by the clock frequency
(HSVCO) but even by the (adjustable) memory length. At the moment we prefer
the adjustment of the memory length with up/down buttons (e.g.
2/4/8/16/32/64/128 ..... 1M) and a 3-digit LED display (the decimal points
could indicate "kilo" and "mega").

Giving devils advocat: What about a CV-controllable division factor?

Thats what the SC-Filter sounds like. It is only really interesting 
because of the steep cutoff slope (and also because it can simply 
connected to any kind of sampling rate). How steep will the slope of the 
SC-Filter-module be?

To me the SC-filter would be attractive if it could do more than just lo 
pass. Hi, bandpass and notch would be great. The A-108 allready 
has a 48 dB lo pass for surgical work so I would personally not go 
for a 60 dB SC-filter that only offers lo pass. 

Actually I would love a strong clean sounding filter with very flexible 
notch. Maybe SC-technique makes possible an affordable cv-
controlled steepness of the slope? That way I would get through the 
backdoor what I really miss: a strong vc parametric eq. We're all 
really gonna need that for the feedback loop of the delay!! ;-)

From what I hear in the examples, I would say that this module 
definitely offers flanging, but probably mostly the raw old school type 
flanging (with losts of extra possibilities for dirtying up). Maybe it 
does not have the character or flexibility that you would like if you 
allready own a classy high end flanger but it definitely has its own 
raw character.

Latest news: Though the spec of the BBD circuits says that the max. allowed
clock freqency is 100kHz we increased the frequency up to ~ 250 kHz and
obtained a minimum delay of about 4ms. It seems that the circuit is still
working at 250kHz. Beyond ~ 250kHz the chip is definitely no longer working.
But we have to try some of the BBD chips and do some long-term tests to find
out all chips will be working under these conditions without damage.

And we will additionally look for a pin-compatible 1024 stage BBD. So far I
have no answer from the manufacturer.

I discussed this feature with Christian. In principle this is possible but
it will reduce the maximum sample frequency as the software has to measure
and process two AD results: the result from the audio converter (written
into the delay memory) and the result from the CV converter (defining the
memory length). This will at least divide the max. audio sample frequency by
two.

BBD module feedback/repeat insert loop

Hi all,
I am really excited about the upcoming BBD module.
For me personally, the planned insert loop in the feedback/repeat chain 
would be one of the most exciting properties.

By inserting a hi-res delay digital in this feedback loop, it would 
e.g. be possible to extend the delay time while maintaining the "bbd-
character". Or by inserting the A-112 a combination of bbd and 8-bit 
characteristics could be created.
Or combining two or more bbd modules to create multitap delays. 

I am already losing sleep over these possibilities.

The first Karplus/Strong examples have been added to the preliminary page of
the BBD module (www.doepfer.de/A100_BBD.htm).
I'm still waiting for the answer of the BBD manufacturer if even 1024 stage
BBD's are available. If it is available we may put both BBDs on the module
(2 outputs available that can be used to mix together with the original
signal and two different feedback pathes, both with positive/negative
control). Thank's Ingo for this idea - even if the module will become a bit
more expensive (~ Euro 150 instead of ~ 100, only a rough estimate !).

For a very basic KarplusStrong-Setup this sounds very nice and very 
controllable. My respect!



For interested people: advanced KS-Synthesis uses a filter in the 
feedbackloop, a filter for the initiating noise, and perhaps additional 
a pulse oscillator (with filter and enveloped VCA) to imitate bowed 
strings.

I created a KS-Patch for the Nord-Modular, which is available at:

be a waste of ressource.
If I have two BBDs, I want to modulate their clock from different 
modulation sources in 80 percent of all cases. Lets take as example the 
famous Roland chorus, which is two BBDs whereone is modulated direct by 
the LFO the other by the inverted LFO signal.

Either I'd like to have two separate modules or at least one module with 
two separate delaylines. There are a lot of famous BBD-based devices 
like the Dynacord TAM-21, the A/DA or the Roland Dimension-D. At the 
moment these examples look like the targets of a possible Doepfer 
BBD-module, but they should be the starting point from where a 
developement goes further on.

Hi Florian,

If this BBD-manufacterer goes along I think Ingo's idea is good from 
a flexibility point of view, it would even be nicer if it were possible to 
have a sort of freqency-divider option for rhythmic variation, but lets 
face it: we're all gonna have to buy at least 2 bbd modules, whatever 
the end result may be... :-)

i had that idea for two bbd-chips on one module
because i think this enables the user to obtain
delay, chorusing and flanging with only one module,
so there is no need to decide which one should buy,
because the module does it all.
different outputs are not expensive to add and probably
give nice stereo effects. after all a module with two
bbd's will be cheaper that two separate modules,
and it will keep dieter from offering two modules,
which will further lower the price.

i can see that two modules offer even more possibilities,
but nothing keeps us from buying two modules anyway.

Don't know if this is possible, but if it will be 2 bbd's, wouldn't it be 
nice to have a hsvco-output and two clock inserts, one for each bbd, 
so you can e.g. insert the a-163. That way you can have 1/2, 1/3, 
1/4, 1/6, 1/8 etc. of the delay-time for each bbd without changing 
the 'master' delay-time parameter.

In case that the BBD module will be manufactured with 2 BBDs (I'm still
waiting for the answer of the BBD manufacturer ...) we will add a separate
clock socket for each BBD (normalled to the internal HSVCO) in any case. But
the A-163 will probably not be suitable as it was designed for audio
frequencies only. I'll have to ask Christian what is the max. possible clock
input frequency of the A-163 (it's software based and uses a PIC
microcontroller).
