Try an outfit called Syntaur Productions. They sell lots of sounds for Ensoniq instruments plus manuals.

Can anyone tell me where I can get an owner/user manual for the VFX-
SD? I just got a previously enjoyed unit and I would really like to
get up and running with this baby ASAP. It sounds like it has a lot
of potential !!! Thanks.

I believe Syntaur have them for $20.

There was another company that I came across while looking for RAM modules,
they had both the owners manual and the programming manual, but I've
forgotten who it was, sorry.

F,
The SD1 would be most similar since it also has a disc drive and sequencer. Not sure of what other differences may exist in hardware, but the SD1 does have a slightly different sound set and upgraded piano sounds. I have one and love it. Good luck.

Thanks, Suz & Bill (see previous reply):
Syntaur is out of musician's manuals for the VFX-SD with no plans to
re-stock. However, they still have manuals for the VFX and the SD-1.
Question: Which of these synths is most similar to the VFX-SD? Thanks
for your input.

Early SD1's (the 21-voice version) had the 25,000 note sequencer on board with an upgrade available to 75,000 notes. The later 32-voice SD1's came with the 75,000 note sequencer standard. At a lower price. (Sorry. It's the nit-picker in me escaping the leash. I feel better now.....)

Probably the SD1, since it includes the sequencer. The differences between
the VFX-SD and the SD1 (VFX-SD2 basically) are really only in a handful of
samples added, and I think the VFX-SD has only 25,000 note sequencer, vs
75,000 on the SD1.

One more and I'll go away. The beauty of these 3 machines (4 if you count the short lived VFX-SD II....) is that sound programs, presets and sequences are all interchangable between them. Very cool stuff.....

Afaik, the SD1-24's were actually rebadged VFX-SD II's (only a few made it
to market with that name, from what I remember). Probably the PCB ribbon
cable problem was fixed during the rebadge too (I'm not sure if the VFX-SD
II suffered the problem or not)

Anyway, you are correct, I was just simplifying, since the SD1 is probably
most visible in its SD1-32 configuration :) Though the SD1 manual DOES
refer to the sequencer as 25,000 notes unexpanded :)

Btw, regarding the interchangability, thats true, though remember that any
SD1-32 patch that uses the SD1 or VFX-SD specific voices won't be fully
compatible on a plain VFX (or on a VFX-SD if you use the SD1 voices). Afaik
though it will load, it will just be missing some voices...

(Yes, I have the SD1 too :)

Good point about the interchangability of sounds. I've only had experience with VFX-to-SD transfers, and they work fine in that direction. There may also be some minor issues with the effects processor, too.

Out of curiosity, how old is your SD1? Have you had any problems with it?

I don't know when it was manufactured, so I can't be sure. I bought it used
about 10 months ago.

So far not had any major problems, it will sometimes corrupt its memory if
there is any 'noise' on the power line, but as long as I kept my
presets/sequences saved, it wasn't a big deal. About 6 months ago I put it
on a spare 300VA UPS unit, and its been powered on since then with no
corruption.

Re: [Ensoniq-VFX-SD] Re: Owner's manual - anyone?

So I take it that yours sits put in a studio and doesn't go out on the road at all. That's probably a good thing, it will live long and prosper. Btw, date of manufacture should be on small ID plate on the rear of the unit on the disc drive end.
Mine will be 10 years old in July and I've owned it over half of that time. It's generally very reliable, although the sequencer exhibits some odd behavior during warm weather. It locked up during a gig about 6 months ago, but an Ensoniq tech talked me through a procedure to clean the connections to the power supply. Has worked like a charm since. My only complaint is the 21-voice limit. Got a JV1080 cheap that fixed that....

Is the format DD/MM/YY or MM/DD/YY ?

Anyway, mine is somewhere around 9 years old looking at it...

Um, golly, good question. Mine actually says "July xx, 1991" (I forgot the day). Being American made I would presume MM/DD/YY, but that's a guess.

Real shame, if it was DD/MM/YY, my SD1 was born on my 21st birthday....
