What is normal touch for a VFX?

What is normal touch for a VFX?

2003-09-10 by jim_henry_esq

I recently acquired a used VFX. Regardless of the setting, it seems
to require an inordinately forceful touch to get a velocity output of
over 64 (50%). I can't imagine what it would take to get a maximum
velocity output. Is this normal for a VFX?

I also note that the keys are very noisy with a distinct clack as they
bottom out. Is this a normal side effect of the polyphonic aftertouch
or is some service in order?

Thanks,
Jim Henry

There is a setting for the keyboard response. Look in the master menu.
(I don't have the manual at the moment.)
I can't remember for sure whether the setting uses descriptions or
numbers. (soft,medium,hard or 1,2,3)
The same setting controlls aftertouch as well. I think the first
number/setting is the velosity and the second is the aftertouch.

Make a joyful noise,
Nathan

On my SD1 32voice, the settings for Touch is: -
On the first screen of the Master Screen,
On the Top Line
In the Middle.

The 16 Options are: -
SOFT 1
SOFT 2
SOFT 3
SOFT 4
MED - 1
MED - 2
MED - 3
MED - 4
FIRM 1
FIRM 2
FIRM 3
FIRM 4
HARD 1
HARD 2
HARD 3
HARD 4

I have almost always used "MED - 2" since new, Ten years or so ago..

Good Luck.

Ralph :-)

Nathan and Ralph, thanks for responding. I do know about the touch
settings. Even on the lightest setting, pounding on the keys will
only produce a velocity of about 90. A reasonably hard key strike is
closer to 70. Does anyone know if this is normal or does it indicate
that some service is required? It does seem like the touch might be
reasonable for the VFXs own voices. It is just the MIDI output that
seems not to provide velocity information that is high enough for
external synths.

Thanks,
Jim Henry

Then You Probably have to adjust the "Master Velocity Maximum". This is
also in the Master settings.

Press "Master" and you will see where you adjust the Touch, as you have.

Press "Master" another 3 times. (There are 5 master screens rotating on
mine, and this is on the fourth of the five screens, although that may
differ between models.)

On that fourth Master Screen, One Setting Says "Master - Vel - Maximum =
127".

If your velocity is any lower, you need to set it to "127". What ever
yours is set to, it is limiting your velocity, so anything above that
level does not get sent to the Sound Module.

I Hope This Helps

Ralph :-)
