Vangelis has used many instruments for string sounds, including live string
sections, so be careful here - they don't all come from one instrument.
What you should also appreciate is that he has exceptional engineering
skills as well as being a skilled musician and is therefore able to make
sounds appear as he wants them. This is why several of his tracks have
beautiful strings in the background (Chariots of Fire, Theme from Missing)
which are in fact from a Roland VP-330 string synth / vocoder.
And this is a point that you should be aware of when looking to buy a
Series III and matching it against your expectations. Wherever a SIII was
used on a record, the chances are that it want through many thousands of
pounds of outboard (SSL desks, Lexicon reverbs etc) all being operated by
skilled engineers and producers to achieve the final 'sound'. Hence the
sound of the raw instrument will more often than not seem 'different' (read
duller) to how it sounds on record.

Uhmmm... this is getting complicated: as I stated in one of my
previous posts: I want to buy an sIII, but... now I want to
verify why :))))))))
OK, so it has excellent choirs, that I know, also it has
excellent cello and bagpipes samples- that I also know (I
have them).
Concluding: I just do not want to end up with sour smile
"OK, so you got yourself a Fairlight, now what?". I guess
you could understand, wanting something for 1/3 of your life
you wouldn't like to end up with something with doesn't
live up to your dreams, would you?
I'm after sIII just because of overwhelming, powerful strings
sound I once heard, and believed it was Fairlight: and it
sounded very similar to that in Vangelis tracks (a little less
