11X - 8 inch disk drive alignment ?

11X - 8 inch disk drive alignment ?

2004-06-20 by James Thomson

Hi Guys,

I have two YE data 180 eight inch floppy drives in my CMI 11X. It seems
after cleaning them I have accidentally knocked the heads out of alignment.
I was so careful using some isopropyl alcohol and top quality cotton swabs
and yet it all went wrong. My advice... Don't even attempt to do a manual
cleaning of your drives. I would use a 8" floppy drive cleaning kit which is
done by wetting a cleaning disk and inserting into the drive.
Where can I get these floppy drives realigned ? Many thanks !

Regards,

What are the most common drives in CMI IIx ? Is it the YE drives or are
other brans more common ?

What are the format used on discs ?

Actually, I have QumeTrak 242's in my IIx. I believe
the service manual says Mitsubishi 2496's were used as
well.

How do you know they are misaligned ?
I'd figure they should not be able to be misaligned without a screwdriver ?

If they really are misaligned, you may try a PLASTIC screwdriver and
realign them yourself, adjust on ONE side only until you have a working
drive. use a spare disk and try to load.

Do NOT use a normal screwdriver at any time because they can (and usually
will) magnetize your head assembly and introduce noise in the signal. In
fact magnetized heads eventually will degrade disks as well.

What extreme thing did you do to misalign the heads ?

Best regards,
