Hi, it's good idee for CMI III 9.34 and more... http://www.scsi2ide.com/ JB

Bonjour Jean-Bernard, Merci bien ! There is no reason why you couldn't use 2.5" IDE notebook drives now with a Fairlight CMI rev9.34 - 11+ instruments. The 2.5" IDE - SCSI 2 adaptor looks really good. The connectors inside the CMI use 50 pin, so this should connect without any problem. The thought of 2 - 4 light weight 2.5" drives is quite appealing ! Of course, there is still the 4 gigabyte limitation of the CMI software. In fact, I think it formats to 4095 megabytes maximum storage. So on a typical 50 - 60 gig notebook drive you are missing out on 46 - 56 meg !!! Maybe Klause-Michel can find a way to move beyond the 4095 meg formatting limit ? :-) Regards, James Thomson Magic Audio Co. The Studio West Hampstead London NW2 3RJ U.K.

H Guys, I was thinking that you could use the quiet 4200 rpm 2.5" drives with the CMI. Now these drives with a WFM-32 RAM card and maybe I would only need three fans running ! Regards, James Thomson Magic Audio Co. The Studio West Hampstead London NW2 3RJ U.K.

I successfully used a compact flash memory card with my rev9 CMI using a SCSI to IDE converter plugged into one of these http://www.acscontrol.com/Index_ACS.asp? Page=/Pages/Products/CompactFlash/IDE_To_CF_Adapter.htm. Very quiet :-). I could then take the CF card and plug it into my PC via a USB CF reader and extract files with CMI Explorer. --- In Fairlight-CMI@yahoogroups.com, James Thomson <jamesthomson@m...> wrote: > H Guys, > > I was thinking that you could use the quiet 4200 rpm 2.5" drives with the > CMI. Hi Rob, Good to hear from you. Have you actually managed to boot your CMI from the compact flash card ? How fast does the CMI seem to run ? Is it noticably slower when changing pages etc while operating from Compact Flash ? Which SCSI >> IDE convertor do you use ? It would be nice if you could share some more info about this. Have you tried a 2.5" hard drive at all ? This sounds like a great way to browse sound libraries on the PC as well as share sounds with others. Thanks. Regards, James Thomson Magic Audio Co. Hi James, I haven't tried booting from the card since I'm rather averse to opening up the mainframe unless it absolutely needs it :-). I'd bet the speed of the CF card makes a difference; I just tried a plain Lexar 32MB and the speed was OK, about what I'd expect from an older SCSI drive. Maybe one of the newer 40x or faster CF cards would give better results though. I haven't tried a 2.5" hard drive, but that's a good idea - there's no reason it wouldn't work. The SCSI to IDE adapter I used was this one: http://www.memorylabs.net/acaecscsitbr.html The only downside to that adapter is it doesn't support ATAPI, meaning the CF card would not be a removable device. Thus to remove the card in order to put it in a PC you'd have to shut down the Fairlight (assuming it's a bad idea to shut down devices in the SCSI chain while the computer is running). Hi Rob, Good to hear from you. I would be very interested to see if you can boot from the Compact Flash card. I see that they make 4 gig compact flash cards now. Would you mind emailing me the latest version of CMI explorer ? I am buying Virtual PC today for the Mac and would like to try and get it working on my Apple G3 Powerbook. I also want to try the CMI control software which replaces the Preh keyboard and graphics pen. Have you tried CMI control software yet ? I still haven't made it to the West Coast but I am hoping to be in Victoria,B.C in February. I hope all is well ! Regards, James Thomson Magic Audio Co. The Studio West Hampstead London NW2 3RJ U.K.
