Fairlight IIx midi/smpte value???

Fairlight IIx midi/smpte value???

2004-12-16 by Kevin Kelley

Ok here we go again, I was wondering what everone on this list
would place as a current market value on a fully fuctioning IIx with
Midi and smpte interface and full library?
Next, what would a series III fully loaded be worth? I am not
selling. I am just wondering what list members think that current
market value would be on these two instuments.
I love my IIx's and have decided to keep them but I see from time
to time fairlights go up for sale and just wonder what factors drive
some of these prices that are being asked. I believe that these
instruments will only be worth more as time goes by but others
disagree.

Kevin (et al),

Sorry for chiming in late on this. Hopefully this will answer your
question:

This is exactly what I was expecting out of this very nice, complete
system. The buyer paid a fair price and will be getting a truly
wonderful system. No hard feelings to those who flogged me for
attempting to sell at VEMIA for essentially that same price. (Although
I think a weak US dollar severly handicapped the VEMIA offering).

I will be unsubbing shortly, but wanted to thank those who provided
guidance and kind words, especially James Thompson and Rene-Yves.
James, hopefully those manuals will arrive soon.

Cheers,

Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your kind words,I was more than happy to help ! I am pleased to
see that you got the right price for your CMI 2X system. My feelings are
that the 2X CMI's are only going to get more expensive. When did we last see
a CMI 2X for sale ? Having said that, when did we all see a CMI 3 complete
system for sale? I would have thought that your CMI would have sold for even
more if you were willing to ship to Europe. I am sure that you are happy
with a price of $ 6000.00 USD though !
The manuals still haven't arrived but fingers crossed it won't be too long
now ! Thanks again for taking the time to do these copies for me. It may be
an idea to introduce your buyer to the group here. Anyway best of luck and
when I am next in LA I will get in touch !

All the best,

James Thomson

Hi James,

First, my apologies for misspelling your last name!

I feel I got what the system was currently worth, no more, no less
(and am definitely happy). The pitiful strength of the US dollar could
have squeezed a little more out of an international sale, but I'm just
a private individual with little time to arrange shipping, thus the US
only.

Those of us who keep an eye on prices might remember the last IIx that
was even for sale - it was discussed it a bit here on the list - a
non-functioning system, and it sold for about $3000 USD!!! The last
complete and functioning system on eBay was sold by dealer/restorer
"Synhouse" (a very nice and knowledgeable gentleman, BTW) for $5699
USD, if I recall, and that included shipping. That particular system
had no flight cases, a minimal library (he sold a large library
seperately, which went for over $400 USD, IIRC) and the manuals were
not original - they were PDFs on a CD.

Everyone wants a bargain, but the unfortunate truth is that bargains
are few and far between, and they will ALWAYS have problems! 100%
functional, 100% complete systems with extensive libraries are like
the proverbial hen's teeth. I expended a great deal of time, money and
effort getting my system in the state it is today; my hat is off to
any Fairlight owner who has done similar because ownership does
require a degree of dedication.

I'm getting concerned the manuals haven't arrived yet - they must be
on a very slow boat! As a precaution, I will make another set of
copies before I ship the originals this week.

Take care and best regards,

Daniel Walters

Re: [Fairlight-CMI] Re: Fairlight IIx midi/smpte value???

Hi Daniel,

So far the manual copies have not arrived. I would really appreciate it if
you could make some safety copies just in case.
A couple of thoughts on things to do with Fairlight. A lot of people
expect to get Fairlight CMI 2X and CMI 3 stuff really cheap these days. I
think they are really missing the point here. The Fairlight CMI instruments
are very special and unique and many CMI's simply do not come up for sale
often. Many owners are holding on to their systems as there is still nothing
new that has the character and warmth that these instruments offer. Many
people say that the CMI 3 is just a 16 bit sampler so you might as well own
something more modern. How wrong they are,as the CMI 3 has a character all
of it own. The depth and warmth to the sound is incredible compared to
anything old ( Roland/Akai ) or new ( EXS 24,Giga sampler etc )
I own both the CMI 3 and CMI 2X instruments and they are completely
different but I wouldn't want to give either up. When I have the time I want
to investigate making the CMI 3 quieter with a modern fan solution and
acoustic foam panels.
 I predict that Fairlight CMI prices on CMI 2X and CMI 3 ( rev 9.34 / 11.39
with router ) are going to increase in value due to the uniqueness and
rarity of these systems.
I would like to try and organize a Fairlight CMI meeting sometime in France
this year. There are many users in Europe, so I think this would make sense.

Cheers,
