Upgrading is possible

Upgrading is possible

2005-06-01 by Colin Ross

I feel with talent on this forum we should do allot more sharing of ideas or help
one another more. I would like to see Rob's programme CMI Explorer
enhanced with VS to Wave, Aiff etc and could you believe the power of this if it
could turn wave, aiff akai etc to VS. The programme alone is fantastic but with
a bit more programming it would be the most major developments for a Series
III. This would make life allot more easier for a goal I have to have a Fairlight-
CMI Forum Library Database were everyone submits samples and users at
anytime can download samples they don't have. A Library would have a
directory of every sound and all we would have to do is start a web page for
Downloads that would cost buttons. Everyone here on this forum wants that,
lets make it happen. We have engineers; programmers here in the group lets
use them. The 32 MB Ram cards have been a big priority for the Series III
users for nearly 3 years now lets share the information and make them. The
components needed are so cheap and a member in the USA has the
machines to make these boards and insert the components. Lets do it. Lets try
and get other media options for the Series II. Lets look at updated software
Revs for Series II III. We all know these are possible ideas. Let not make it a
moneymaking organization but a shared community task.

Hi Colin,

I think your idea of a CMI 3 sound library on a dedicated server is a great
idea. Why can't you offer this now by having a CMI 3 4 gig formatted drive
mounted on a dedicated server ? We could then all access this via FTP and
download it onto our dedicated CMI 3 drives. We could also send you any of
our sounds and you could compile everything.
Some of the things you mention such as software updates,32 meg RAM cards
have taken or will take many hours of time to bring to fruition. True ,there
are a lot of technically minded CMI owners here but why should their efforts
be for free?
The trouble is,is that a lot of Fairlight owners/enthusiasts all want
something for nothing. They think Fairlight stuff should cost next to
nothing. I think much of this comes from the " free software " culture that
exists now. Nobody wants to pay a good price for highly engineered hardware
anymore. I personally think Fairlight system/parts are worth paying a good
price for because of the uniqueness/sound quality of the system.
We used to have so many audio companies competing with one another and now
we have Digidesign and Apple computer. We are in a " Microsoft " situation
in the audio community and I think its bad for all of us.
I think paying £ 500.00 is worth it for a WFM-32 and I would also be
willing to pay £ 750.00- £ 850.00 for an alternative sound storage method
for the CMI 2X. Imagine a CMI2X without 8" floppy disks churning away in the
background ! If this ever happens it will have taken a lot of hours of work
and the inventor/designer should make some good money from it. There are few
user /owners around the world so this should be reflected in the price of
the product.
Anyway these are my thoughts !

Hi James
I think you've misunderstood my email or I have not
explained it properly. I'm not asking anyone to work
for free what I'm saying is that the 32mb cards can be
made for a hell of allot less than £600. Emails I've
got from a user/s across the globe states that these
could be made for approx £100 - £125 and that he would
make them for that. He is happy to supply these for
that price and that includes his time producing them.
The components used in the 80's at the time was the
best out there but technology has came a long way in
20+ years , better and much cheaper. I knew before i
wrote the email that it would ruffle feathers but I
felt this email had to be wrote because many users
email me on a daily basis and the amount of telephone
calls I get about this has came to a stage were I
needed to voice it on there behalf. I can not bring
these ideas to life by myself I need everyone's help
and to get everyone on-board or the Fairlight
community will forever go around in circles. I started
this forum to help and make steady progress forward
and in a way I feel I've achieved this but 3 years on
I feel this progress is not were I wanted it to be.
Hope this answers a few questions and if anyone has
any ideas or question voice them.
Regards
Colin
