Syco video - CMI 11X with CMI 3 hard drive section

2003-10-26 by James Thomson

Hi Guys,

I am very intrigued by the Syco video of the CMI series 11X demonstrated by
Kendall Wrightson. It is definitely a series 11X but it seems to have a
series 3 hard drive section. Well I would love to know about the inner
workings of this particular CMI. It is obvious that a series 11X can be made
to access, what look like two hard drives in the mainframe.
I may even attempt to contact Kendall Wrightson himself about this CMI.
Anyone else know any more about this model of 11X ?

Regards,

Hi James
The Fairlight in the video is not a IIX but indeed the fabled Fairlight
IIIL, a hybrid of the IIX and III, it was this machine that evolved
into the series III. Pretty smart stuff here, with 16 bit sound, hard
disk drive and tape streamer, but only eight sound cards though and IIX
style software eg Page R, Page 6, Page D as demonstrated in the clip
etc. Basically the sound of a III with the functionality of the IIX.
Hope this helps

Gerald, can you be more specific in your question ?

- Use a flightcase.
- prepare documents for fedex beforehand (it takes time to figure
things out I noticed)
- Be prepared for VAT and import tariffs in the UK
- have an account with fedex (you can apply locally)
- maybe you want to fly over to check things before shipping ?

More ?, ask.

Regards,
Harald.

It depends a bit on the model type and the exact size. Some models came
with very stable flightcases, some didn't.
I usually ship large packages with Schenker International; they never let
me down and can even build shipping crates for moderate prices.

Hi,
It is a Synclavier pmtsd post/ pro system weighs about 155 pounds and
doesn't have any flight cases, although the seller is going to crate
it. The quotes I have been getting are very high, eg £1500.00!!
many thanks
Gerald

That's ridiculous; I've had a Fairlight shipped from the US to Germany for
around $350. This might have been a couple of years ago but even today I
wouldn't expect to pay more than the equivalent of roughly $800 or so. I
had a Fender Rhodes Suitcase shipped last year which cost me about $700 for
shipping costs including packing and crating.
So I suggest you look around for some other international movers.

I presume this is the quote from the seller ? Shop around with FedEx and
tell them the weight and outside dimensions. They'll probably give you a
better price. Then you might ask the seller what the cost for the crating
is.

A large flightcase with 48 Kg of total weight with FedEx from the US to
Europe would cost around $330,- shipping. Flightcase around $300.

Does anyone have a good address for flightcases in the US ? I'm in the
process of shipping my Fairlight.

Harald.

Hi,

Are these prices for air or marine shipment ?

Thodes prices were for air shipping (or combined air-ground shipping which
means that the shipment goes by plane to a central airport in Germany and
is then carried by truck to where I live).

Hi Guys
Got it sorted, a company called TNT will ship from the states for about
£500 all in, but this is buy sea, however this price is a bit more
realistic, all I have to do now is worry about the import duty!
many thanks for all your ideas
Gerald
It does pay to shop around!!
