IIx floppy drive

IIx floppy drive

2003-11-08 by Laurence

Hi everyone,

I'm having a terrible time getting one of the drives from my IIx
repaired. The "experienced" repair people I've sent the drive to
can't seem to do the job properly and I've had to send it back to
them twice now, much to the irritation of all concerned.

Does anyone know where I can get this thing fixed? Or where I could
possibly buy another one? One place I saw online was asking $600 for
one sold "as-is". Insanity.

The unit is a Qume 242, by the way.

Any and all advice appreciated. As we know, without two working
drives, I've got an expensive paper-weight on my hands.

Cheers,
Laurence

http://www.i-t-s.com/repair/floppy-repair.html sells them for USD 295.

http://www.cadigital.com/flopdriv.htm for USD 545.

Actually, I.T.S. is the place that I've been having trouble with.
They seem like nice people but I've had to send my drive to them
three times now.

The first time, they told me what was wrong with it and that they had
it fixed. When I got it, it didn't work. So the next time I actually
sent it back with my other drive (the working one) in the hopes that
they could "match" them or something. When I got them back, they
indicated that they had made another repair to the bad drive and,
this time, it should work. It didn't. I called I.T.S. and they told
me, rather brusquely, that they didn't want to keep sending the thing
back and forth across the country anymore. The manager said that he
was going to try to just send me another drive. He said he would
check and see if they had one in stock and, if not, he would locate
one and call me the next morning. He didn't call. Three days went by
and I called them. The manager wouldn't come to the phone but I was
told that he couldn't find a drive and I was given yet another RA
number to send my drive back again. <sigh> Needless to say, I'm not
holding out much hope.

Any other ideas?

Cheers,
Laurence

[Floppy Drive problems]

> Any other ideas?

Yes. Try to find a university or a big computing center or something like
that. Sometimes they have this kind of stuff still around somewhere or are
about to put it into the junk. I got two floppy drives from the local
university for about 10$ a couple of years ago (used them to repair another
Fairlight). I also got floppy discs from a computing center for very little
money.

Apart from that there's a big register in the US available at newsstands; I
believe it's called "Computer Shopper" ot something like that (I've
forgotten the name, sorry). Maybe that one lists more suppliers. The last
time I checked there were suppliers listed for the most exotic hardware
like the old Xerox computers, Kaypro computers and so on.

Hey, Computer Shopper. Now there's a good idea. I guess I'm so used
to looking on the internet, I sorta forgot that there was actually
print media out there. Duh!

Thanks for the tip.

Laurence
