I'd give money for a copy of the Pet Shop Boys discs.
Any change you're willing to share them?

Cheers,
David

He may be thinking of the Series III. My Series III, which I purchased new in around '86, 16 voices, was around $78,000 if I recall correctly. But I don't think they went as high as 100k.

The Series III sold for well over $100, depending on options and I seem to remember them being £68,000 for a basic 16 channel machine, in the UK.

Over here the CMI IIx was priced 200000 Dutch Guilders. At the same time a medium size family house cost aprox 150000.
Compared with todays pricing of the same house, it would cost over 200000 Euros, or 290000$.
Cheers,
Peter Kersten.

doesn't mean much as its digital hardware. Not analog. Digital is
subject to moores law. You are buying a unique sounding instrument but
it shouldn't be based on the original price. More on how much you want
that unique sound

Re: [Fairlight-CMI] Re: For sale Fairlight CMI IIX

2010-11-03 by Peter K.

Basicly original prices mostly don't say anything about an instrument and it's current value. With Fairlight however, it is part of the myth that it was soo expensive!
The price impressed me back in the 80's, but it did not made me decide to buy one. It's sound and the certain magic it has when working with it, made me get one.
Also I would like to point out: A CMI has an analog VCF and therefor is not Digital, but hybrid :P
As for comparing with modern digital hardware: Modern computers are way better than the ones in the 80's, but modern samplers may have better specs, they still don't even come close to a CMI.............
Price is based on how much is the person most wanting it offering, what condition etc is the instrument in and how much does the seller want.........

It goes for whatever price the owner is willing to part from it. I would
have a minimum price under which I simply wouldnt sell.

Your logic is flawed sir! ;) The IIx filter is to reduce aliasing distortion, that is an integral part of any DA. It was cool that the CMI let you adjust it, but that does not make it a hybrid even in the broadest sense of the word. :p

No question about it. The Fairlights are hybrids.
Don't forget that they also have analog VCA's.
