Best way to record series 3..... ?

Hi there !

I was just wondering how you all recorded your series 3's : 

I have a small project studio, where I have most of stuff connected digitally.
I dont have a router in series 3, but I do have a stero mix card (Thanks to 
horizontal !)

My question is : if I want to record the fairlight with best sound quality, will I 
need to get a 16  xlr input analogue mixer capable of mixing to subgroups ?

Can I just take the xlrs outputs to a 1/4 inch jacks in a patchbay, and create 
groups by bridging the grouped outputs together, or will I degridate the output 
?

I am really just after some ideas on how you guys do it and what results you 
get. 

I probably find you all have huge mixing desks now and ill be embarased. ;(

My answer would be: ”It depends…!”. I often use the mix output. I know the manual says there’s a lot of noise, but I don’t think it’s so bad. And if you want to use an analogue mixer and mixing to subgroups (I did that some years ago – and the result was not much better than the mix output, as far as I remember), it have to be a good mixer if you want to avoid any noise from 16 channels, subgroups etc. The biggest problem with using the mix out is, everything is in mono. I don’t know about a router. I asked Peter Wielk a couple of weeks ago about the possibilities of buying a router using routing as a solution, but I have received no answer…Peter, do you read this? Is it possible with ver 6.03 to use a router, and which possibilities will the router give you?

If you want the mixer solution, maybe it would be an idea to look at some of the small digital mixers – Roland VM3100 PRO or something like that. I guess you can buy a small digital mixer for about a couple of hundred Dollars/Euro/English Pounds.

Router software....

Hi Klaus,

I'm sorry if I haven't answered your mail, but I haven't been aware 
of any incoming.... To answer your question, the software for the 
dynamic voice allocation, ie the router software, is only present in 
revision 8 and above. The router is a switching matrix that appears 
after the analogue outputs. It's great for the fact you can have 16 
voices of (say) piano in one bar, then 16 voices of brass in the 
next, with each voice summed to it's own XLR output... You can also 
assign each subvoice to a differnt XLR output if you want...
