Looking for a sound

Looking for a sound

2012-10-05 by jaddams80

Im looking for a breathy/radar/sonar ping sound, which (I think) comes from the fairlight.

You can hear it being used in the following tracks:
Thomas Dolby - one of our submarines is missing - both as a breathy background and also as a higher pitched ping

used all over New Muzik albums
anywhere - areas - breathy ping
anywhere - world of water - breathy ping
anywhere - luxury - again the breathy ping
anywhere - while you wait - opens the track and is used throughout
anywhere - changing minds - clipped ping
- to be honest it looks like its used on every track...

anyone help?

Off the top of my head, it's a sample called WHTNOIS, and is, essentially, a pitched white noise sample. I'm not sure if it was a factory library sample or something that came after. There are many variations on the factory library and some samples appeared briefly on some disks and not on others.

I know this sound mainly due to my obsession with Dolby :-)

But yes, WHTNOIS. I'm sure that's what it is called. Peter Vogel gave me some lists of library sounds so I'll dig through them.

Come to think of it, it may have been a CMI Series I or II sample, as opposed to the IIx (I only have the IIx and III libraries and data here). Given the fact that the New Musik tracks you refer to were recorded in 1980, and TD's One Of Our Submarines was recorded circa '82, they preceded the IIx somewhat.

I know for a fact that this sample appears on the Bitley Fairlight Platinum ReFill for Propellerhead Reason. I know that Patrick sampled a IIx, but the chances are he may have had access to a II or I library. Patrick has also started converting this library into Kontakt, but I can't recall if this sample is on there.

Don't know how much help that has been but hope it has somehow.

Regards,

Rob.

mmm, thanks rob.

Gives me a good place to start. I did a search through the IIx library and couldn't find it, so I suppose it must be I or II.
I've had a go at reproducing it without much luck so far :)

That sound is from the micromoog. It is just filtered noise.

Dolby didn´t use the CMI on One of our submarines.

The Dolby sub-sound noise sound is most likely from from an old Simmons clap trap...I'm sure because I owned one and it makes all kinds of noises other than claps which didn't really sound like claps at all.

Yeah, could be a Clap-Trap too !

Anyways, IMO it is not a CMI sound. Dolby didn´t have the CMI when this was
recorded.

This has been a great way to research how music is put together.

I've been digging as far as I can into the Dolby history and it seems he was using a PPG Wave computer called "Henry" at them time. Henry was replaced with a CMI when he fatally fell down a lift shaft on a US tour! He also references a clap sound which was used, this was a snare drum slowed down. He bought a simmons module (the clap trap?) and triggered it from the PPG. I'm now going through the PPG library and will keep you posted as to my results :)

The CMI was called "Henry the second".

The PPG library you are looking through would be the Waveterm B sample
library. This library has no relation to the Wavecomputer that TD was using.
The library is of a much later heritage.

TD used the Simmons SDS-V on record and tours, being triggered by Henry.

Hello,
it is very simple to produce such sound with a standard analog subtractive synth. You have to use white noise as source (vco off) trhu a standard LP filter with a high resonance,middle- high cutoff value not modulated at all, and a vca controlled by the adsr with no attack, but decay and release of your choice.
Ciao

Just to finish this one: I've got the sound!!!

Sampled myself into audacity and transferred to aif.

edited, Looped and tweaked (smoothed the sound a few times to reduce the higher frequencies)

added pan and pitch mod to get a more dynamic sound (both controlled by envelopes)

the generic envelopes are:
The Thomas Dolby version is attack and release of about 1 sec (1000ms) with full sustain
The New Musik version is attack of half a second (500ms), sustain of half and release of 750ms

I know it was finished but here's a slight update

The actual fairlight sound is called WHISTLE.VC

I think it is a series 11 or possibly series 1?

It can be found on the ANALOG disk!

If anyone has more information on which series it comes from - my bet is 11? Definitely not 11x

:)
