Is there a way to use the ExpressPCB software to print a mirror image of the board for toner transfer? I've looked through the software and its help file without finding anything about the topic. Save a copy of the board, if it is two sided, under another name. Using the renamed copy, first print only the bottom layer, it comes out reversed for use with TT. Delete the bottom layer and if you move all the top layer to the bottom layer you can now print that out and it will be reversed for TT. --- On Mon, 6/8/09, Steve <steve65@...> wrote:

Thanks for the help Malcolm. The board was developed by someone else and I'm getting the ExpressPCB info from his web site. The board is two-sided. I am able to print the bottom layer as you suggest and it is mirrored. And then I can delete the bottom layer. Moving the top layer to the bottom layer has not been successful as of yet. Much of the top layer will move to the bottom layer, but every pad stays on top. Is there a property that is set or perhaps something else that prevents the pads from moving to the bottom layer? Pads, unless surface mount pads, or specified as one layer only, appear on all track layers. Do a little experimental circuit with surface mount pads, through hole pads and non symmetrical text to see the effect. I have attached a pcb with top surface mount component, top tracks, text and through components. If you select it all and move it to the bottom layer then print out the bottom layer, all is ok, except the surface mount component does not appear. If your board has surface mount components you need to find the printer driver that pretends it's a pdf printer and print to that, by making it your default printer, to produce a PDF of the board. You can then reverse that by printing from a pdf reader programme. Non 1:1 scaling can be a result of this process and you may need to alter the printer scaling to get it the right size. If you are using photo sensitised board the problem is reversed as you need the emulsion surface to print toner to ensure the best resolution. Some printers have a transparency option and will print in reverse when this option is selected. --- On Wed, 6/10/09, Steve <steve65@suddenlink.net> wrote:

Thanks for the help Malcolm.

And then I can delete the bottom layer.
Moving the top layer to the bottom layer has not been successful as of

stays on top. Is there a property that is set or perhaps something else
that prevents the pads from moving to the bottom layer?
Thanks,

In Adobe reader 8 do the following to mirror the image: Choose Tools > Advanced Editing > TouchUp Object tool. Select the object, (put a box round it by positioning the arrow at the top left, hod down left mouse key and move to bottom right. Right-click/Control-click the selection, and choose the following: Flip Horizontal, Flip Vertical Flip Horizontal flips the image horizontally, on the vertical axis. Flipping text blocks horizontally creates a mirror effect. Flip Vertical flips the image vertically, on the horizontal axis. and away you go --- On Thu, 6/11/09, Steve <steve65@suddenlink.net> wrote:

Malcolm, I have Adobe Reader 8.1.5. The Tools menu has three choices (Select & Zoom, Object Data and Customize Toolbars) but Advanced Editing is not among them. You might try one of the free (free of cost and free of legal encumberances) pdf reader/editors. Many of them support such simple operations as reversal. Check the listings on <en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PDF_software> and at <http://pdfreaders.org/> I use Foxit, Evince and GhostView, depending on circumstances and need. HTH, Donald.

Mirroring is often hidden in the PostScript options. or 2. Get a copy of CutePDF reader, it loads as a virtual printer and converts whatever you print into a PDF file. You can use the advanced PostScript options to create a mirrored Postscript file that can be printed by anything that can handle PDF files. And it's free 8-). href="http://www.cutepdf.com/" I use CutePDF Writer to mirror the top silk layer from FreePCB => Gerbview on a regular basis. Just check that each step is set to print the images 1:1.

I have tried moving the graphic images from the express pcb program into several other graphic programs. The scaling seems to be different between them and I usually ended up with a top pattern that didn't match the bottom pattern. The only way I have found to be accurate is that I use the DXF output for my top silk screen layer, I invert it in a cad program. Unfortunately the DXF output will not output the top copper layer. I gave up and now use the free pcb programs from Eagle or DipTrace for double sided boards. Both have the ability to print any layer. I think the libraries in either are a pain to use, and end up making most of my own components. Rd [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Richard, Does DipTrace have the ability to print mirror images? I see the free version has a 250 pin limit. Looking around the web site, I did not find a definition of "pin." What does it mean? "Pins" equals legs on a component. Resistor and capacitors have 2,etc. Rather than set a limit on the physical size of the board for the free version (like EAGLE). DIPTRACE uses the total number of "pins". You can get a free upgrade to 500 pins by sending an email to support@... and say you saw the offer here. Note: these "free" versions are for non-commercial use only. You can purchase licenses for other versions with up to unlimited number of pins on the DipTrace website. IIRC you have to manually change the first line of the gschem netlist to "*PADS-PCB*" (without the quotes) for FreePCB to recognize it. I don't use netlists as I haven't synched a few of the gschem and FreePCB symbols. href="http://www.freepcb.com/" You are probably going to have to create a LOT of symbols no matter which layout package you get.

Last time I check Eagle was the only free PCB layout program that had schematic capture. You draw the schematic and the program ensures the PCB layout matches the schematic. Once you have schematic capture you will not want to do without it. Well worth the extra time it takes to learn Eagle. --- On Sun, 6/14/09, Harvey White <madyn@...> wrote:

Both DipTrace and Eagle do mirror images. DipTrace does it in the preview window, where you can turn on or off whatever layers you wish, and mirror image any of them. In Eagle you need to turn off what ever layers you do not need to print then go to the print window. In Eagles print window you can mirror and scale the printout. I have been tempted to play with the scale, one can do both x and y axis scale. Since toner xfer shrinks a bit, I have wondered if I could scale to get accurate enough a board to CNC drill the holes. I would predrill the blank board, then mess with the scale and transfer till I got a match. RD [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Richard, I can tell you it works because I am doing it with a HP1020 laser printer and a MAXNC-10 mill. I use Eagle to layout the PCB. There is a ULP called PCB-GCODE to generate G-CODE for the CNC mill. Once I have the drilled PCB I use toner transfer to etch one side at a time masking the other. To get the alignment it the ball park I insert stick pins in a hole on two diagonal corners, then fine tune under a bright light. Daniel, Thanks for the info on CNC drilling. I do have PCB-Gcode, and am in that group. Have never tried it. I used the output from DipTrace. DipTrace can directly output the drill file that I use in my CNC. It also will output a file for isolation routing in .dxf format. My CNC software will use the .dxf file to do isolation routing. My home made CNC linear bearings are a bit sloppy and I couldn't get the depth of cut consistent enough to get good isolation routing results. But, the drill file works extremely well. Will have to give it a try on the next board. Sure would be better than being cross eyed for an hour :-). I use a light table I made back when I did tape up layouts for photo reduction, to align the patterns when I do double sided. I have done several double sided boards by taping one end of the toner patterns on a scrap of board, then aligning them on the light table, slide the blank board between the patterns, then feed thru my laminator. I get good transfer on both sides at the same time. RD [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Richard, The MAXNC mill could route the board. Toner transfer is faster because I was making about 12 PCB of each type for a class i was teaching. Let me know if the pouch alignment methods with predrilled holes. Good luck. Daniel --- On Tue, 6/16/09, RICHARD HEILIGER <rdheiliger@...> wrote:
