Apple Logic Pro /LogicExpress Discussion

I've been through that section of the manual a FEW times, and cannot 
seem to draw a gradual tempo curve in Logic 8. I am starting at a 
tempo of 120 BPM and want to gradual go to 60 BPM to end a song. 
Everytime I try to draw curve between two tempi, I just end up sliding 
the first tempo node to the right? I am using the pencil tool, but 
even tried the automation tools, as well as the marquis tool...same 
effect. Can anyone help?
