Apple Logic Pro /LogicExpress Discussion

I use Logic at home and at work, where I oversee a Mac-only MIDI/DAW lab for college students. I also teach a basic music tech course. Most classes have only about 1/3 of the students using Mac, which has forced me to look at PC alternatives for those who are into that.

I've lately been looking at LMMS (Linux Multimedia Studio) since it's been ported over to Windows. I think it's easier to grasp and get going in vs. Reaper. And it's also completely free.

Though it does come with some built in plug ins, it will also host VST plugs. To keep cost down, I would recommend the following freeware to run with it:

1. Native Instruments Free Kore Player. Get all the sounds you can from the website to play in it.
2. Native Instruments Free Kontakt 3 on the same website.
3. ComputerMusic Magazine is usually found at Borders and Barnes and Noble. 18-20 bucks per issue, but the included DVD has tons of freeware plug ins for Mac and PC.
4. Any Google search will turn up lots of free options for PC.
5. If you're wanting to spend a little on sounds (esp. for Kontakt), Tradebit.com is a low-cost option for finding, buying and downloading samples.
