Logic Alternative

2009-12-29 by HKC

Hi I have a son who is starting to work with music software. He knows his way around Logic from my studio but he uses Windows and isn't interested in migrating so my question is which program should he go for. He just needs an entry package (that's mainly because of money) but it must include something like a decent sampler so he can get access to my samples. He will probably use a drumtrack, 3-4 keyboard-sounds and 8-12 audiotracks so something like Logic Express would be great if it only existed for Windows.
He has the Line6 KB37 soundcard (or whatever that strange beast is) which included Live7 Lite but the problem is that the interface is very different from Logic so I'm guessing that he won't catch on to that as fast as he would probably like.
I tried to download Reaper but that doesn't include anything so that's probably not it either unless there are a lot of freeware out there that could be used with it.
Maybe somebody here has had the same experiences or know of a forum where these things are discussed, I just realized that I have been shopping in the Proworld for so long that I have lost contact with the other end.

I use Logic at home and at work, where I oversee a Mac-only MIDI/DAW lab for college students. I also teach a basic music tech course. Most classes have only about 1/3 of the students using Mac, which has forced me to look at PC alternatives for those who are into that.

I've lately been looking at LMMS (Linux Multimedia Studio) since it's been ported over to Windows. I think it's easier to grasp and get going in vs. Reaper. And it's also completely free.

Though it does come with some built in plug ins, it will also host VST plugs. To keep cost down, I would recommend the following freeware to run with it:

1. Native Instruments Free Kore Player. Get all the sounds you can from the website to play in it.
2. Native Instruments Free Kontakt 3 on the same website.
3. ComputerMusic Magazine is usually found at Borders and Barnes and Noble. 18-20 bucks per issue, but the included DVD has tons of freeware plug ins for Mac and PC.
4. Any Google search will turn up lots of free options for PC.
5. If you're wanting to spend a little on sounds (esp. for Kontakt), Tradebit.com is a low-cost option for finding, buying and downloading samples.

Hope this helps!

I tried a download link that said it was for Mac, but it seemed to be an EXE for Windows. Would love to know if someone can find it for Mac.

I have quite a few plugins that I can give to him since I used to use Logic on PC and therefore I have many VST PC licences that hasn't been used for years. Sonalksis, Ohm Force and others come to mind so plugins aren't as important as a sample player that can play EXS samples but I suppose Kontakt 3 can. I can't seem to find that for free though. Where did you see that.

Hmm I teach music and apparently Steinberg gives a 50% discount to teachers so suddenly Cubase 5 seems very interesting. I can't find anything else that complex in that price range. With the discount it's below 300 euros in Thomann.
