How Many Tracks before Computer Non-Compliance?

How Many Tracks before Computer Non-Compliance?

2007-05-18 by pete_buchwald

Hey Gang,

This is both a quasi survey, and a quest for tech help.

I started a re-mix project yesterday. My friend Rachel Loy let me have a copy of her Pro
Tools TDM session for my audio students to try mixing. I was able to truncate her 50
tracks down to the 32 required for Pro Tools LE.

I decided to try mixing the session myself in order to practice mixing.

When I pulled the files into Logic to start mixing .... it just wouldn't play!! Maybe a
measure and then a window pops up and says "sorry charlie" so to speak.

I've tried all kinds of things with buffer size, with putting the project on external firewire
drive (through a hub), or internal drive.

When I open up the project in Pro Tools on the same computer (G5 Macbook) it plays fine,
and I can insert plugins without any complaints from the CPU.

I'm tempted, in Logic, to add tracks one by one and see when the computer finally
surrenders.

I'll have to resort to doing sub-mixes of drums, etc. in order to mix this. But wanted to
see if any solutions other than Ensemble or somthing were discovered among my Logic
Pro peers.

Thanks for any input on these matters!

Are you using the latest version of Logic. If not it runs under
emulation on a intel macbook and would cause this problem. When you
say G5 and macbook do you mean powerbook which is a G4 or macbook
which is an Intel machine not a G5?

Hi Pete,

What audio hardware? What version of Logic? What OS? What sample
rate? What file type? ... ... Have you checked the mixer/audio routing?

Best,

Andy

One trick is to hit PAUSE then un-PAUSE rather than PLAY. For some reason,
hitting Play makes Logic freakout but Pause allows it to get its act together
and then play in many borderline cases.

You can also bounce all tracks to audio and then just play audio with no
plugins at all. Its like freezing the files, but I did have some crashes at times
when freezing or unfreezing.

So does anybody have a rough track number in their head for their Logic Pro's limit?
Without an Ensemble.

Audio Hardware: I tried both my MOTU 8-Pre and my MBox (1).

Logic Version: 7.2.3 (Academic)

OS: 10.4.8

File Type: .wav (created in Pro Tools) 44.1/16 bit I think.

Intel Macbook

Not sure what you mean by "checking the mixer/audio routing."

Thanks for any input.

Hi,
limit... I mix songs with 70-80 tracks without problems. It is usually the disk that is slow.
How much ram do you have?

Pelle
G5 2*2, 3,5Gb
Fireface 800
2-UAD1
Powercore
