Record buttons missing on my instrument tracks

Record buttons missing on my instrument tracks

2007-07-25 by dancensoul

Hello,
New Logic Express user here...Quick question. I set up my multi-
instruments (external synth modules) in my MIDI instruments layer in
the Environment, then cabled them to my associated tracks in my audio
layer in the Environment. Upon going back to the Arrange window, I
noticed that my audio tracks have a record button to arm, but none of
the multi-instrument tracks have that record button. I can play my
external modules with no problem, but can't figure out why there are
no record buttons. Did I miss something in the multi-instrument setup
in the Environment, or something as far back as in Logic Setup
Assistant. Still scratchin my head! Thanks!

I am not quite following this. If you have an external synth module, you
don't need to cable anything. You just create a multi-instrument, then make sure
to click on however many tracks are active on the hardware device (e.g.
Kurzweil all 16, Nova 1-6, Nord 1-4, etc.). Then set the midi port to agree with the
port the midi cables are plugged into. Then go to the arrange window, and take
a midi track, and select the item and midi channel. I don't think there is a
record button there - just on the transport, but you can tell without
recording, by playing something on your controller keyboard when you have Logic
selecting the given channel.

For example, if you have a USB keyboard, then hook up an Access Virus
hardware synth to port 3 (channels 1-8 activated), then create a track on the arrange
page of Logic, hold down the mouse to select Multi-instrument (hopefully you
named it "virus' on the environment page so you can find it easier again) and
select "Virus > Channel 1". Then play notes on the usb keyboard and you should
hear them come out of the audio outputs of the virus. as you change tracks in
logic, you should hear the different patches on the virus.

Hi Greg
Thanksf or the reply. I pretty much did all of that and can play and hear my external
synths, as I select each MIDI track (or audio instrument track) I can play its corresponding
synth in my rack.

My confusion comes in after watching this movie from the Logic Quick Tips site about
setting up multi-instruments:

http://bj.angeltowns.com/logicquicktips/movies/lqt_mt.mov

In setting up the Stylus RMX, when its tracks are created, each track has a record button
with it, just like the audio tracks. From what I understand, that button can be used to
record the MIDI to the track. When I used the regular record button in the transport
window, I had to arm an audio track, then play the synth and I saw the MIDI data being
recorded and displayed as musical notes. See what I mean in the movie, I don't have those
record buttons on my MIDI tracks.

Gents (and Ladies)....look like it's a "Pro" vs "Express" feature:
another "Pro" vs "Express" thing:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1049920&tstart=30

Seems the MIDI tracks are in auto record mode as soon as u hit the
main record button in the transport window (the movies I see ,as in
the ond below, I see are all featuring Logic Pro....)

Thanks for the read.
