Has anyone has tried having both versions installed on the same machine yet? If so, are there any pitfalls and things to differently. I've bought a new version rather than an upgrade, and was thinking of having both installed for while to ensure that any 7.2 projects can be finished in 7.2. I have both installed and can go back and forth with no problem on my G5. I also have them on my powerbook although 8 is slow on it. Graphics are the main issue there. Projects started in seven can be opened with no problems in 8 but not the other way around. No dongle is great so I can have it mobile. So just to push it a little further and reading between your lines; it is thus possible to open a Logic 7 project in 7 after it has been worked on (and saved) in 8? No. not after being saved. I have opened 7 projects in 8 and then reopened in 7 but made no changes or saved in 8. Once you save it in 8 its 8 only unless you export audio files etc like you would to switch to Pro Tools etc. Its a one way street so to speak. I also have had no problems opening 8 projects that contained UAD-1 plugins on my powerbook without them. They are just crossed out but I can do beat matching and stuff while away from my studio. When you save in Logic, it's in a new format, a bundle format, ends with .logic in the project name. Hi Tim, Man Parrish here. You CAN install sample elsewhere [ie; another disc] but you'll need to be a little computer "savvy" at this. You should know that I've had different results on different systems with this ranging from no problems to partial hassles. Basically you have two options. Option 1) IF you have enough disc space on you primary drive, aprox 40 GIG <- then you can do a FULL install. In THEORY you can then go into your MacintoshHD/library/audio. Copy the Apple Loops And Apple Loops Index folders to your external drives. Do not erase the originals until you know this is working .. and make aliases of "apple loops" and "apple loops index" folders on your EXTERNAL drive. Then copy those aliases back to the original MacintoshHD/library/audio folder and in theory logic should see the moved samples... In other words, you are copying the samples to your external hard drive, making an alias, then copying the >alias< back to your internal drive's exact location of the originals so logic knows where to "look" for the move samples. Option 2).. more complex .. Insert the Apple Loops content install DVD discs and mount them on the desktop. You will have to use the "find" command in the finder and search for "invisible files" on the dvd. You will see the hidden installer packages for apple loops and all the other installer content. You can choose the desired package [ie:remix tools or orchestra] and then install and choose a folder or drive to install to. You must be aware of the different package installers. Some are samples, some are the midi data for the loops, etc.. I'm sure someone here can figure out what is essential here. You'll find some are part of the main logic installer and you'll get an error, and others will simply copy the loops content to your desired drive. When finished installng content, you'll have to remember to make aliases on your external drive and place them back in MacintoshHD/library/audio so logic can find the moved samples. Please be aware that I've had various results with this. Probably due to the fact that I may need to repair disc permissions [dick utility app] and probably need to rebuild my desktop database. [techtool pro or disk warrior apps] On one computer, when I open apple loops utility, I see the loops no problem, on the other computer I have to manually go over to the external hard drive and use the 'library" feaure to search for loops. The disadvantage with library search that is that it does NOT let you preview loops in sync with your song, like the loops browser does. If this is all confusing, I'd suggest to do a minimal install and just choose whatever loops you really need. I own other samples so I omit stuff like orchestra and film score I don't use or already have elsewhere. I do mostly dance music so I usually don't need these. Hi Chris, You can choose a directory but only on SOME of the content. Seems that Logic/Apple wants you to put certain sample files directly on you Macintosh HD. Probably because other programs like Soundtrack and GarageBand reference them..? But you will notice in the installer that you can't choose a custom directory for some of the large sample library installs.
