In the Box or Out of the Box Processing??

In the Box or Out of the Box Processing??

2008-02-26 by pete_buchwald

Just curious what processing people opt to do out of the box instead of in the box with
Logic?

Recently I've experimented with processing reverb out of the box, and more as an insert. The
lack of any latency between original track and the send track I think is the sound I'm
preferring.

I've toyed with the idea of mixing through outboard stereo compression on the master fader.
But .... I guess I don't really own one ....

Yeah, I think some top guys mix hardware on the overall buss or even as send/returns. I am thinking of doing that too. Compressors and preamp distortion seem to be hard to model in software - at least compared to hardware. mercenary.com has plenty of high end compressors but I have heard the cheapo RNC compressor is pretty decent too.

I recently got my hands on a focusrite mixmaster which, amongst other
things has a stereo multi-band compressor. I'm taking the master BUS L
+R out the main analogue outs on my Metric Halo ULN-2 thru the
focusrite and back into the inserts and mixing off that. I record it
back to a stereo file when I'm done. I'm liking what it's doing. I'm
not that experienced a mixer and the compression on everything seems
to make it easier for me to pull a good sounding mix together quicker.
It seems to add a sort of hardware mojo to the sound too. When I
disengage the unit it sounds thin now.
