Slow Logic

Slow Logic

2008-04-07 by Norton, Mike - BUP

Hi,

I'm a relatively new Logic convert (from Cubase). In the last few weeks,
Logic has started to slow to a halt when I open files or create a new
song. In fact, on some occasions it stops responding completely. As well
as that, new files are losing links to the media library - I can play
loops but not drag them onto projects.

I'm on a G5 with plenty of RAM and I have not added any instruments or
effects. The only thing I have done is followed the auto update of the
system and (I think) Logic itself. Is anyone else having the same
problem as a result of Leopard upgrades?

Thanks in advance,

Mike Norton

I have found that if you keep your projects on an external drive, I
use an exernal LaCie FW-800 drive, and record your files to this
drive, performance is much better. You say plenty of RAM. What is
Plenty? I have 2-gigs. Also, what KHz are your projects? 44.1, 48,
72, 96? The larger the number, the more taxing it is on the system.

That shouldn't happen. I would suggest :
- Making a separate hard drive for your music system (Mac OS, Logic, etc). If
necessary buy an additional disk, and do a clean install of the system and
logic.
- Open the TERMINAL and to the periodic cleanup routines (sudo periodic
daily, etc)
- Open the Disk Utility, and repair permissions
- Run Diskwarrior from another disk or from a CD.
- Make sure you have 20% free hard disk space
- Try opening a new logic song not from a template (you may have audio files
or loops in your homemade template file which it can't access)
- Try opening a song that takes forever to load, and see what file its
looking for. For quit Logic, then in the finder do a search (command F) for that
file name to see if it exists. You may have added loops from a sample CD to a
song, then the CD is no longer available later.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
