Track automating the volume of a MIDI track

Track automating the volume of a MIDI track

2008-12-08 by Fresh!

Hello LC musicians,

I have a MIDI track of a piano sequence given to me. I noticed that when I import it into Logic, it's actual volume is at 4.9 dB...way to loud. I have it in a song that has a 2 bar drum into before the piano starts. What I am trying to do is set the level of the piano volume at 0 dB but ever time I do so in track automation, it jumps back to 4.9 dB when the piano starts. Is there any way to lock the piano track volume at 0 dB?

Thanks in advance...
Doug

You have to open event edit. There must be an control event that brings it up to 4.9. Delete all volume data (use select similar events) and the fader will stay wherever you want it to stay.

Ditto on what he said,

I think when I had to solve that problem, using the event list, it may have been a "control"
command. Remember the max volume would be at or near a value of 127, that might help
you identify the line of MIDI to delete. It should also be at the beginning of the song,
measure one, beat one, etc. That should help you find it also.

if you have a pure midi track then there is no automation and that is the last thing you want to use to change the level. Instead :

- adjust the fader for the midi channel to go down (on a software instrument like EXS24), or

- alter the note velocities in this way :

?a. open the midi sequence in the matrix editor, and select all notes (command A)

?b. now open the event list, and? you will notes highlighted but not control events. select the velocity and drag it down

???? if it refuses to go low enough, then option drag to make not be stuck with the lowest value

Automation is generally for audio or plugin?controls and should probably sort of a final step at the end of a production. Even if you automate the level, its easier to just adjust the whole thing down with one mouse click rather than go through all that trouble.

So, Yeah, there's a Volume CC (Control Change
http://www.midi.org/about-midi/table3.shtml)in the MIDI file that
needs to be stripped out. If you open the MIDI part in the Piano Roll
Editor (Matrix Editor in Logic 7) and open the Hyper Draw window
(button in lower Left click disclosure triangle or Local
Menu>View>HyperDraw>Volume (or Expression Control) you can Shift
Select all the nodes and delete them. Alternatively, with the MIDI
file selected, open the Event List (E is the key command in 8) and
filter out all the events except Controller (every button should be
dark except the controller button). You will see only control
functions. Select the first Num 7 event then go to Local
Menu>Edit>Select Similar Events. Now all the CC 7 events are selected,
then use the delete key: voila! Same goes for CC11 (Expression) a lot
of people use Controller 11 as a volume dampener (Yamaha). Good Luck!
