Studio Monitor Headphones

Studio Monitor Headphones

2009-03-27 by Steve Currington

Hi..

I am about to buy a new pair of Studio Monitor Headphones. I was wondering what people are using and what people suggest is a good buy?

Now I don't want cheap ala $30 pairs.. but I also don't wanna spend my life savings <grin>
I prefer over the ear models.. Don't like the ear bud style and the styles/designs that sit on the ear and "crush" the ears - I find that both these are hard to wear for long periods.

I have had Sennheiser and AKG brands recommended as a starting place but there re others out there that are also worth looking into.

Any advice would be appreciated..

NB I live in New Zealand so major brands are what I need not some local knock off etc... I will need to buy locally or I guess via ebay/amazon or something.

Hello Steve,
You have not said whether you will be using them for tracking or mixing?

Obviously closed back phones are better for tracking/monitoring, as
they reduce spill onto mics, especially for vocals, but I have always
found open back phones easier to listen through for long periods, and
definitely better for judging a mix.

I would recommend going for Sennheiser Beyer, or AKG whichever you
choose, as even their low end models will have the benefit of their
R&D experience. Generally avoid phones aimed at the iPod market as
they often have a "larger than life" sound.

I am using;
Open for mixing reference
Sennheiser 430, now discontinued, but very familar as I've had them
for 20 years+
Sennheiser 565 Ovation

Closed for singer monitoring
Sennheiser HD250 linear

Closed for loud drummers
Beyer DT150 (very similar to the DT100s, but with a more open top end)

I assume these should all be available in NZ?

Hello Steve,
Then I would definitely go for open back headphones, and Sennheiser or
AKG.
I believe AKG made a pair that were intended to address the imaging
issue that occurs with hearing the sound from "inside the head" rather
than in a soundstage between the speakers, but I can't recall which
model it was.
My suggestion from my own experience would be buy the best you can
afford in the Sennheiser HD6* range.

There are sets on eBay at the moment for around 170 UKP

Hi , I use Sennheiser HD250 II's, which make a good comparison when used with studio monitors. My son uses HD25's (closed back), and the more I use them the more I love them, especially for live mixing. As the guys have said, try some, it's all very personal.

I have to agree that open-air cans are more comfortable. I would say
that if they have them in NZ, you should also look at Grado. I have a
pair of Grado SR225s, and they are really wonderful.

Steve,

When you say "studio monitor headphones" do you mean you want to mix in headphones?

I tell my audio students: Don't mix in headphones, but if you absolutely have to. Use AKG 240 headphones.

The open ear headphone will tend to give a flatter, more monitor-like response. But have a lot of bleed to offer the microphone if you want to use them for tracking vocals or something.

If you are looking for headphones for musicians to track with. Maybe others have strong suggestions. I spent a gift certificate at Guitar Center and bought some kind of $40 Sennheisers. They work fine. I know there's better ones out there for comfort, but they aren't bad.

Pete

I have a pair of the AKG 240 for mixing and they do the job. Although, I say I get a brighter represntation when using them and lose a little of the bassier frequencies. They are good for a quick mix, and then off to the monitors the next day for a proper one.

my 2 cents

Re: [Logic_Cafe] Re: Studio Monitor Headphones

2009-03-27 by Steve Currington

Thanks Pete.

Due to the location of my studio (in my home) and issues with sounds
driving neighbours and family crazy I mix with phones and only use
monitors as a last resort.. I can't afford a sound proof room at
the moment and don't really have the space to create one.

For live stuff I use a studio I have limited access to so it is just
mixing tracks or composing via Logic etc. It is mostly Orchestral
style stuff no "heavy metal" "Rock" "HipHop" etc etc... Well almost
none anyway. But even full orchestral gets pretty powerful and some
of the contemporary "classical" stuff can really irritate the
locals.... Sure does me at times ;-)
