Midi Out?

Midi Out?

2009-09-10 by ruthsboy1

Ok...I've been trying to hear my keyboard through my headphones from my MOTU's 828 mk3 for 3 days now and I still got nothing. I've narrowed the problem down to the fact that logic is not sending midi info out to the keyboard's built in tone generator. Midi Goes in (I can record), But midi does'nt go out as indicated by the LCD on my MOTU interface. Does anybody have any advice.

A few suggestions :

1. Go into the Audio-Midi utility and go into test mode to see if sound
comes out

2. Try moving the midi sequence to a softsynth and see if it sounds.
Sometimes you can have the midi channel set to something wrong in the
sequence.

3. Next, take a midi sequence and put it on the track in the arrange
window, and look if the midi monitor on the transport is showing any
indication of midi activity.

4. double check the port numbers are set right.

5. change midi cables.

6. make sure the hardware is set to respond to midi. Every keyboard can
be set to just play and ignore midi, or respond to external midi, or
both.

7. put headphones on, and plug them straight into the keyboard and try
playing a note and see if you hear anything.

Ok Greg...I tried your suggestions and here's exactly what happened:

1. While in Audio-Midi Utility I tested an Icon that represents my Motu 828 mk3. There are two arrows on that Icon that represent the In/Out. When I click on the Out arrow (Left arrow facing down),the Midi activity indicator on the LCD of my MOTU interface lights up, but there is no sound. When I touch a key on my keyboard the right arrow blinks(arrow facing up) and the LCD lights up again...but I get a tone that sounds like a Mac computer alert(not a tone generated from my keyboard). What does that mean?

2. I tried moving a midi sequence to a softsynth and it does sound. All internal sounds come through the headphones...it's the external instrument i'm having trouble hearing.

3. There is midi activity going out, as indicated by the monitor on the transport.

4. If by port numbers you mean selecting my interface in the inspector, yes it is properly assigned.

5. I have'nt changed the midi cables yet...but if there is midi activity in/out, is it necessary.

6. Hardware is properly set to receive midi...I quadruple checked it.

7. I put the headphones directly into the keyboard and it does come through...I hear it, so it still works.

Thanks, I appreciate all your help.

SUCCESS!!! I just wanted to thank you. I can here sound out of my
keyboard and you help me narrow it down to my interface.

My interface has 2 MIC IN Jacks and Logic reads them as Inputs
1-2...well...Input 1-2 is what I set up for my keyboard when actually
the cable was going in analog 1-2 which logic read as input 3-4. When
I discovered this it was a big OMG! moment...I just assigned the right
outputs to the right tracks and the sweet sound of music (apple loops)
where coming through my head phones.

Thanks again dude...you help me get there.

Tim

This is getting to be pretty specific to you so I will take this
message privately.

Regarding #7 - you can hear the keyboard when you play it with your
hands, or when you are playing the sequence? The answers should be NO
and YES. If so, then your audio has a problem - your cables from your
keyboard to your mixer need to be looked at, and the audio system. If
the answers are YES and NO, then yo
ur keyboard is not set to MIDI only.

Regarding midi cables - yes its rare for them to go bad, but I have
experienced bad cables myself. I did not do anything special to them
and they were just sitting around my home studio. Try buying another
one and putting it from MOTU to Keyboard.

By the way, are your midi cables connected properly to the keyboard,
from MOTU to the midi-IN on the keyboard, and from keyboard Midi out to
MOTU
 in?

I don't have a MOTU interface - I use the Emagic AMT8 which is designed
to work with Logic.
