Converting Logic 5.5 PC Projects

Converting Logic 5.5 PC Projects

2009-09-26 by jvtalbert

Hi folks!

There appears to be a similar thread to this, but it seemed to be more hardware centric and going from Mac to Mac. My question is a bit different.

I was a Logic Platinum 5.5 user on PC for several years. I recently picked up an Intel Mac Book Pro that I'd like to run Logic on when I'm not working on my PC desktop. I'd now like to go back and convert my old 5.5 projects. The end goal is to get up to Logic Pro 9, but I've got to first get past this huge project conversion task (about 70 projects).

So here are my questions:

- What's the minimum version of Logic I need for the conversion on a Mac/Intel machine? Version 7? 8? 9?

- What flavor do I need minimally: Pro or Express? Would it matter given that I also utilized EXS24, EPV88 and EVOC20 plug-ins? Would Express keep these settings through the conversion or just throw those settings away?

- Not clear to me if 7.0 works on Intel. If not, can I still get the Universal Binary/Intel upgrade from somewhere if I could only find a copy of 7.0 to buy? If so who has the upgrade? I can't find anything on the Apple site about it anymore.

- Will the "built-in" plug-in settings carry over (EVP88, EXS24, etc.)? And if not, will I at least be able to save a Logic Preset file (.PST) from 5.5 and load the settings that way?

This information would be a BIG help! I've been researching this for several days now and I still feel I have clear direction. I'd like to get moving on this as soon as possible so I can include some of these songs in near-term as well as future project work and it's just too risky to put any more effort into such an obsolete version.

Thanks much!

John

I think Logic always is able to open up previous projects. When they
are really old, it does some type of conversion. You probably should
just give it a try.

The non-intel versions of Logic will probably run in emulation mode in
some way. I would just go straight to L9 and try to open and save as
new files. However, no matter what version you use, it will take a
while to hunt down any audio files. This can be really time consuming.
There used to be a way of starting logic whilst holding the shift key
or something to ignore audio and just open the files.

The settings will probably be saved if the same plugin is present - but
things like Absynth 2 will not be transferred over to Absynth 4 at all
- they are like separate plugins and you lose all the info - except the
original midi track.

7. I was able to convert all mine (same situation) using 7, but not 8.

Express has most of the same functionality as pro, so you might get
by with that. I did some that way. Any plugin that is not included
in express would lose its settings. For example, I had used the
EXSP24 for a while, and none of that transferred over to EXS24, even
though it can use the same instrument files.

I don't remember exactly, but I definitley had some version of 7
working on Intel. I just tried to find 7 to test it out, but
apparently I deleted it. Funny, I still have 5.5.1 in my apps folder
though. Not sure why. I tried launching, but it didn't like my
XSKey. Were we still using the serial boxes back then?!

Strike that. I just found 7.1.1 on my audio drive, so I know that
ver. works on intel. I also launched express 7.2, and reallized it
doesn't have any of the plugs you mention, so all that would be lost.

Good luck.

That's why I need to know for sure.

I'd be extremely surprised if any of my VST plug-in settings
would carry over because they'd be completely different than the AU
equivalents. I'm already prepared to do that part by hand (and it
will be very painful for sure!).

Really, if possible I'd like advise on the recommended version for
this kind of conversion from someone who has already hit this wall.
I just don't want to end up buying the wrong thing. (Oh if only
SSL's Pro Convert wasn't such an insane price!)

I have found this whole process hit and miss. Yeah any 3rd party VSTs
are probably gone - although you could try that VST wrapper thing. If
there were any Logic plugins they would probably retain their settings
because they are built in to logic and neither VST nor AU.

Yeah, I had a feeling that would happen. :-( But good to know in advance. Now I can avoid the surprise!

Things are more clear. Now I just need to track down a reasonably priced version of 7.1.1 Pro (or greater) so I don't end up broke when I upgrade to verion 9. My only slight worry is the case where I can only find 7.0 and the upgrade to 7.1.1 is no longer available from Apple (but I'll think be positive for now...)

Thanks so very much!!

Wrapper? I assume FXpansion makes it. I'll have to keep that in mind. (Good idea!)

That is what I'm betting on. Otherwise, this will be even more painful.

You know, if Emagic would have added "Freeze" before Apple bought them, this might have been just a wee bit less of a hassle! :-)

You can use the "poor man's freeze" : solo each track and bounce to
audio. Then you don't need to worry about any conversions. Just start
all audio from bar 0, and then you don't have to import the files into
Logic. Instead start a new Logic file and import the audio clean.

I agree. Actually I've done that before two or three times to get
projects into another DAW. But I'd rather not have to do that for 70
projects! I really wouldn't be able to find that kind of time.
Converting them to native I'll be able to work on them on an
up-to-date and supported DAW - and in this case on a machine with
more horsepower. I'll also be able to finally retire (or restage)
my old PC much sooner which has no other use right now other than to
open Logic 5.5 projects

Yeah, but it can't make PPC VST plugs work on Intel.

Hmm what is that music transport format that can be used to move projects between Protools and Logic,. Is it OMG or something. Damn I forget & I am not near my studio riht now..

Anyway. wonder whether exporting in that and then importing into a different version would work??

Just a lateral thought?

You're referring to OMF. Unfortunately, Logic 5.5 will only include
audio that resides as a physical audio file as part of the OMF
export. Virtual instrument tracks and group busses are not audio
files and are thus omitted from the export! That behavior was
consistent with other hosts I've done OMF exports from. What I'd
like to see is an update to the OMF spec that specifies that any
tracks that CAN be rendered as audio are pre-rendered and included as
part of the OMF export. The way it works now is incredibly outdated
considering the way many people use their DAWs.

OK I now remember it is an OMF file.
As I say wonder how that would work? Never used one before so don't
know what it brings and leaves behind.

I do have Intel VST for most things (never had a PPC Mac). With a
wrapper at least I might have a chance at importing my settings. I
also have AU for most of them. For the ones that have their own patch
management, reimporting settings should be very easy with no wrapper
needed.

But we'll see. That may be the least of my worries. Right now I
cannot find a copy of Logic 7 Pro anywhere at a reasonable price!
